A little help please
#1
ok fellow MedHeads, I need help with 2 things.
First, creating the stutter, trailing effect on the clip titled "fading vocal clip". In the clip it stutters (for lack of a better term) a bit then fades out. Has a nice little pattern to the stutter as well. I've been trying to create something similar to no avail. I've been messing with the Double Delay combined with the Chopper in C4. I've also tried it with the Glitch and so far neither has given good results. Any suggestions, advise, direction, etc. will be more than greatly appreciated as I want to add this to a vocal in an rmx I’m working on and I need to turn it in.
Ok on to the second thing. In the attached file "bassline clip" said bassline has a great swing to it and the 2nd series of notes in the bassline come across as muted. Like when a bass player doesn't fully fret the strings while playing the notes type of thing. In the attempt t re-create a similar swing and sound - in C4 I’ve set the quantize to 64-triplet, made each note in the midi editor 3 cells in length, the start of each note in midi editor is set to the first line behind (to the right) of the beat, so "E" in the count 1-E-&, 2-E-&, etc. the 2nd series of notes I’ve turned the velocity down to 50 and shorted the notes to only 2 cells but still am not getting that kinda muted sound.
Again any help would be appreciated!

I just came across a plug in that might help and its free.

http://destroyfx.smartelectronix.com/ scroll down and check out the skidder.

You could also try the Suppa trigga that I mentioned in the Free plugins thread. Its by Bram at Smartelectronix.

Also, some kind of step gate may be useful, like in the camel audio camel space.

Bit,

Hi, I normally edit my audio inside the DAW to create the stutter effects that way you have a better control over the stutter pattern, or you could find the portion of the sample, cut it up, throw it into battery and play it off your keyboard. But the technique in the example you posted is easily doable via that method.

NuEra, Rami, thanks for the replies.
Rami, with "editing inside the DAW", just take, lets say the last measure of the vocal; then chop that into clips and lay it out on the grid in the pattern i want correct?

thats it.

Depending on what part of the clip you want, try experimenting with diffferent parts of the clip you'll come up with some nice patterns,a nd timbres to paly with.

also dont forget to cut the beginning of the sample you want as close to the zero crossing point to avoid clicks and pops, and as small as a fade out on each stuttered clip as your DAW will allow. Most DAW allow temporary rendering of the fade onto the sample, instead of having to make minute fade out automations on each copy of the clip.

try the 'mg trigger gate' from mg audio... lets you draw in your gate rhythm pattern and adjust other settings like attack & release. then you can automate it to fade it out.

oh and its free too Smile

PK1 I'll check out the plug as well.

Now, anyone have any idea regarding my second situation, the bassline?

I was going to recommend the mg trigger gate as well, perfect for what you needed. I think the vocal just fades away but you could also automate the depth of the gating action to let up on that.

Don't use 64 triplets that would be way too hardcore, just 16 is fine, 64 will give you way too many spots to place. You can also just try a really hard swing. One trick would be to import that song into your editor and see how far the notes are off from the straight grid as a guide... Also those muted notes might not actually be from the bass sound itself, to me it sounds like another sound played in an 'answer/call' type pattern. Would have to hear the rest of the track to tell if they were one in the same.
