Hiya Bane, welcome aboard!

In theory you should get the track to sound exactly as you want it to in the mix so the ME has as little to do as possible.
EQ, buss compression, reverb, etc. as you mix.
But I have Meds mix and master all my stuff and master everything for the label. A lot of times on my tracks and rmx's he has to mix them a bit before he masters them. it is a long and arduous road to music nirvana.....(i think i heard that somewhere before, hehe).

I recently started using the Ozone3 and i think it's top notch. i actually like it better than the L2 now that I was turned on to it via this forum.

Dj Bane,

Welcome to the forum...

I always mix something to sound mastered. I never do a seperate mastering phase (even with Bill's stuff too...)

The only time I master something is when I receive just a stereo mix, or stems.

There is nothing you can do in a mastering situation (say with a stereo bounce) that you couldn't take care of better in a mix.

The more you can make your mix sound like a final product in the mix itself the better!

That being said not everyone's skills can get to that final level. At that point you get it as close as you can, then you send off to be mastered at which point anything that wasn't addressed on your end can be. Many time's I have people go back and re mix certain things before passing along to me.

Concerning Ozone. I only use Ozone for one thing and that's the intersample peak function. The rest of it I leave alone. For an all in one thing though it's pretty good. I got it back when version 1 was out but haven't used it much since then other than that one thing. It does a good job on the limited giving you a hot but clean sound due to the clipping style limiting it does. With the L2 it doesn't limit as drastically so they're's some mushyness that can go on when using it. Depending on the source though this might be advantageous and in the past I have specifally used the L2 to smooth overly transient material.

Hope this helps.
