How does your DAW rank in popularity?
#1
Not that popularity means anything in music production, but it is interesting to see how the DAWs rank. I've got some comments on the whole thing, but figure I'll let you guys chew on it for a bit before commenting.

BTW, I urge you to look more into this website and read some of his comments/analysis on the various DAWs. An interesting read all in all.

Music Software Popularity Index - 2009 Q1
May 12, 2009 - Digital Music Doctor announces the results of the Music Software Internet Popularity Index for First Quarter 2009. As in all previous releases of this study DigiDesign Pro Tools holds the lead position. During 2009 Q1 two pairs of products swapped positions: FL Studio moved back into the number two position replacing Steinberg Cubase which dropped to third. Apple Logic moved up one position to edge out Adobe Audition for the number five slot.
The ten most popular music software products on the Internet, based on recent search engine activity, are:

This index is based on quarterly Internet search activity on Google, Yahoo, AOL and MSN. Collectively these 4 search engines represent more than 95 percent of the searches on the Internet. Over 100 search terms are used to construct this index, and 15 music software products are tracked. An annual average of the past four quarters is also included for comparison. The following table shows a complete list of the products tracked as well as the changes in their ranking from the prior quarter:

Curious as how they came to the the value and functionality ratings. Not sure that can be accurately done through searches.

They did some more in-depth analysis for that one. Here's what they wrote on how they got that:

Functionality vs. Value

In the DAW shootout all of the numbers boil down to just two in the bottom line - a functional rating and a value ratio. The functional rating is the average of all of the 130 separate category ratings for each product, and the value ratio is the functional rating divided by the market price (minimum advertised price) of the product. The value ratio is intended to highlight which products provide the most value for the price you pay.

Its probably worth keeping in mind that Pro Tools dominates the film and television post audio world. That will definitely have an impact on looking at the results from a music point of view. Even further, its probably safe to safe, Pro tools dominates a good chunk of the music recording business as well. So looking at the results of this study from an electronic music standpoint is even further removed.

Hmmm ok seems they're taking features verse price.. hard to tell as I can only read that page for so long due to the color scheme they've got going on hahah

But it seems what they are saying is that for the price compared to features Live 7 isn't very good. And in a way I can see this to be true as it's missing a lot of stuff most DAWs have. But in practice I found it to be the most useful and creative DAW at the time due to the workflow and this isn't something that's going to show up on paper.
