So much to read about gear and technques, what about the mind games?

Good point on the more you learn the more you know. For me it was always a bittersweet experience as I was happy to have gained new ground but also realized I still had a long way to go.

That's brilliant, sums it up nicely.

Yeah, but you've covered some ground man.

I feel that as long as I notice even the slightest amount progress from project to project I must be on the right track.

I read a very interesting article a while back on the two types of creative people. One type bursts onto the scene with tonnes of confidence and most of their early work is their best. While the other type is slow to develop and their best work does not come until years of dedication. The article was about art, but I would say that applies to music as well.

I hope this thread has helped others keep things in perspective as much as it has helped me.

Thank-you medway forum users! Smile

this is a good thread.... everybody needz collective spirit/motivation.. that'z why ppl attend art classez and such.. grouping of tha mindz! forumz are good for that.. and they're especially poignant when you have pro'z on tha board, doing what you are aspiring to do... and sharing their experiencez.. it'z a great source of information/inspiration and encouragement! i took last year out from work just to progress my skills and make muzik as my main goal..

i learnt a fair bit AND made a few probably silly mistakez! (like turning down an offer 2 put some trax regularly out coz tha label waznt Toolroom/CR2/Stealth) u live and learn! tha main thing that became apparent 2 me waznt anything technique based, but it waz 2 mix-up thingz a bit in my life and keep myself in tha best frame of mind possible.. surrounding myself with thingz that make me happy in life! i've found that when ur in ur best state of mind everytime you touch tha PC itz sequencer gold!!! Smile and also i learnt that tha groove/funk is THE most important thing! i must admit in my experience there arent many eureka momentz.. it'z when u play something back that u did tha year before that u can really notice your progressionz... EG you've done better editz/engineering/synthesis.. better groovez etc.. i expect every1 here feelz tha same as me in that muzik is their heartbeat... u gotta keep that heart happy! go see ur girlfriend, go see ur fave DJ, go for a nice walk and go stroke ur dog! mix it up! we're not programming machinez!!

there is a book called tha artists way and it'z a pretty good read.. inspiring.. i recommend it.. it'z unofficially endorsed also by BT as well! (what product isnt!) hope my ramblingz may strike a note with sumbody sumwer! the muzik making journey can be a long road! but we're here to make tha best muzik possible and put tha joy into something that has brought us so much! We really CARE!!! a little sidenote here and hopefullly y'all can relate but 2 look @ tha long journey/taking chancez aspect thing in a real-way.. have a look @ sum1 like Laidback Luke'z output/discog for example.. how long has he been around? if you scope his discog you'll see he hasnt alwayz made like 15 trax a year! sometimez only like 3 or 4.. he'z hung in there 4 time! (11yearz!) tha bitz he'z putting out like last year (hot, hot etc) are absolutely burning!!! He'z on FIRE!! Also from tha beatz/hiphop camp, Just Blaze said about how he got started also.. he waz so skint that he HAD to sell his beatz.. he didnt think they were that hot at all.. but he just had 2 eat.. so he did it.. listen to him now, he'z arguably tha best producer/beatmaker in HIPHOP!!!

i think sometimez u maybe just need 2 start like that.. even if ur not feeling ur tha next Deadmau5 or wateva.... the intention of doing wat u do and tha challenge of having 2 be professional maybe before you've reached your creative plateuxz/aspirationz can help u rise 2 tha challenge and bring out your best work yet!!! Hanging in there payz off!!! life and muzik iz an ebb and flow.. sometimez better sometimez worse! We're all rising to the challenge here, wanting tha best for ourselvez and otherz.. ! We're gonna make it!!!! HANG IN THERE!!!! oh and be prepared so that u can take advantage of tha chancez that will definitely come your way!! JOyski X

Hey Joy I totally agree, been through some slim times myself even in the good old Hooj days, and creativity/inspiration can wax and wane as you describe.

Like you say, hang in there. And I agree you got to live your life too, I know I spent the better part of this weekend enjoying what little Dutch sun we've had ;-)
