4 gigs RAM
1024 buffer
SX3
On a blank template, i stopped adding at 16 channels with Roomworks as an insert. Stationary or in Play, it's was hitting, maybe, 2%.
On a full on song with everything done, (35 tracks) i got up to 7 (as an insert) the 8th one started to snap, crackle & pop.
sorry, newbie mistake i'm sure, but were we suppose to do it on a song or blank template?

Bill,
Go back and do your blank template again but this time insert a bit of audio on the track and cycle around it. If you haven't got any audio there then the plugin basically won't be in use, hence the low reading you saw.
Interestingly I've found out the CPU meter in SX (and it seems in other DAWs) doesn't really measure CPU at all.
Not sure if Rami can try this being on a Mac but in Windows when I see my CPU in SX3 at 95% in my XP task manager it only shows about 50% usage.
I even tried out Live 6 and it had the same situation. I put some reverbs on bringing the CPU meter up to around 30% yet in the XP task manager it only showed 17% usage for Live.
From what I understand now these meters are really ASIO buffer meters and not an actual measure of CPU usage.

Sure will do when I get home Im at work right now, I also got to test another Mac, much faster one, results are at home I'll post them as well.
On the note of roomworks, dont know if anyone has tried this yet, but from the stock VST's that come with cubase sx3 the only one that I have wrapped successfully to use inside pro tools is Roomworks, Ive always wanted to have that to use inside PT as it was one of my favorite Reverbs. All the other VSTs gave me an error.

Ok Jesse, I'll do that when i get home from work. Sorry about that.
Good to know about the CPU meter in Cubase. I'll have to take a look at that tonight as well.

Mac G5 PPC
Dual 2.5 Ghz
8 G Ram (didnt fluctuate much and stayed at 732 Mb when SX was opened)
FSB 1.25 Ghz
1024 ms
24 instances of roomworks with no problems, sends @ max. sent from an audio track, 25 it started to glitch.
Jesse,
When activating as a send, the send amount actually does matter the more you send the more CPU it uses up, I assume as an Insert it would be the same as a Max. send value.
Also my CPU usage for the whole system seemed to rise consistently with Cubase's CPU usage, mirroring it.
Bit,
I was reading through the 410 manual and it said you could increase the hardware latency from within the firewire mixer program if you are experiencing any drop outs, give that a shot if you havent already, I dont know if that affects your DAW and its CPU usage at all, but worth a shot.
Also have you tried going into your task manager and turning off all unrequired tasks your PC might be performing.

Alright fellas,
Re-tested.
11 tracks with audio loop, some pad sound, 8 measures in length.
Audio Priority set to Very High
Preload amount set to 2 Seconds
Lower Latency ticked
Multi-Processing ticked
Adjust for Record Latency ticked
Record Placement offest set to Zero
10 tracks ran at 95%
11th started bouncing between 95-100% and snap, crackle, pop and i didn't even add milk yet.....
As for the CPU meter and WTM matching up, they didn't. I'm looking at the WTM right now as i type this and Cubase is looped in the background; it's running about 24% solid, and the CPU meter is reading 95% solid. I've got minimum processes running, always do. So Jesse it looks like on PC's it is an ASIO buffer meter and possible on Apple's its truly an CPU meter.
Rami,
Yeah i control the latency thru the firebox as it acts as my soundcard. i don't have an on-board soundcard. Is there somewhere to adjust it in Cubase as well?

I've got 10 tracks of audio playing, each with Comp, Eq, and a Limiter... Izotope Ozone on the main out, 8 buses loaded with fx and a few Space Designer reverbs... Running smooth as hell... 18% cpu

I thought 4 gb ram was the cap with our current OS...maybe just with Logic?

Bill,
Hi, inside cubase from the device menu, device setup, vst audiobay, it should let you internally choose what soundcard you want and what latency settings cubase should process at.
Steven,
Hi, ya it must be with logic, which is strange considering that logic is designed by apple you'd figure they configured their OS to unitilize as many of the computers resources, given you are using a Mac Pro. I wonder when was the last update they released for Logic 6? from what I understand they abandoned updates for Logic 7, a while back.
I personally dont use that computer, with the 8GB, but next time I get a chance to I will load up a really big session in PT or Cubase and see how much of the Power Mac G5's ram is being used, the OS is 10.4.9
Jesse,
I read the results incorrectly yesterday, I must have been watching the USER CPU usage in my OS's Activity monitor, which corresponds to user progams being run, thats whay it was mirroring cubase's CPU usage
Ill try it again when I get back home from work today.

Did you ever try Altiverb? I found RoomWorks to be too much of a cpu hog.
