Xpander
#1
Im looking at investing in an Oberheim Xpander, for personal use, Ive only heard good things about this synth, and the specs seem to be of the wall, even when compared to some of todays synths. One voice chip isnt tuning correctly however I am sure I can find a replacment chip for it. That leaves it at 5 voices.

Any thoughts?
Previous or current owners, that might have any negative comments, or positive ones. Please feel free to share.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I never owned one myself but a production partner back in '95 bought one pretty much off the strength that Sasha used it as the lead bass in his 'Direct Me' remix.

It's a very thick and creamy synth. Won't have the bite or punch of the rolands. But if you want massive modulation pads, thick basses and the like its one of the best out there.

The matrix systems on the Ob's were ahead of their time, giving you almost the same if not in same cases control that modern synths have.

They have a unique timbre as well. If you can get it at a decent price I'd say go for it.

I dont want to start another thread, but you guys heard that Dave Smith is releasing the Prophet 8, to mark the 30th anniversary of the original, they hit the stores in a week or two.

Its been slightly redesigned borrowing from the evolver, and the original Prophet 8 designs.

Sounds great, thicker than the evolver.

Cool didn't know that. Funny you mention it as I was going to make a comment that you shouldn't be worried about only 5 voices on the Xpander as the Prophet only had...

Just came in a couple of nights ago, all the voices are tuning fine, I guess the previous owner hadnt given it enough time to tune and warm up.

Very Very smooth, a filter that will rip a hole right thru your head, and leave the rest of your body shanking. Me and lucas spent all night tweeking it.

Good call Jes, glad I jumped on it.

While on the topic of analog, if you havent had a chance to check out the new prophet 08, all I have to say is "heed the prophets calling".

Pure analog path, the clocks on the Oscs are digital, yet the oscs are 100% analog, with increased slop over that of the evolvers oscs.
