Allen & Heath Xone 3D
#1
Was wondering if anyone here had any experience with this mixer, specifically as it relates to controlling a laptop with it running Live? Any feedback appreciated.

My question would be how hard is it going to be to get these things on a rider for playing out, or do you guys indented to lug it around with you which isn't that practical.

Good question, Jesse, it isn't very portable. I was also looking at the M-Audio Torq Xponent, which looks like it will fit in a laptop case, but the Xone 3D looks more rugged despite the size. The Torq looks like you might snap off a knob if you twist it hard enough, whereas the Allen & Heath is more renowned for it's craftsmanship. I'd be using the Xone 3D in the home studio first, so portability wouldn't be much of a problem at first.

the Xone 3d would be a problem toting around. What about the 2d (for portability)? granted (well for the way i set up) it would only leave 1 channel for a send (i use 3).
the Bitstream is pretty ruggedly built and would fit in my laptop backpack nicely. Plus lots of features to play around with.
I also have a few anvil cases laying around that would be a snap to mod for a controller and easy to check at the airport.
The Torq is crap (unfortunately). cheap plastic build, so you're right Sven. Get into a mix too much and *SNAP, a knob or fader is gone....
Hawten, Sasha and few others lug controllers around.
I did find a DIY (kit) controller that looks EXTREMELY promising. waiting to hear back from the guy. Completely modular and complete customization depending on needs. If he actually pulls it together i'll let you guys know.
But for now, to mix, i've been using the UC-33 which is only a step about the torq.

Yeah, thought so...

How is the fader action on the UC-33? Friend of mine bought a MTB (Midi, Transport, Breath) controller, with knobs, faders, and transport controls. I do prefer the case of that one as it is metal, but the pots seemed to be loose as they pivot or wiggle a bit. Not something you want in a controller.

Cool, let us know what develops.

you know, it is a plastic shell top(as is the Torq) but the bottom is metal; so it does seem a bit more rugged. the faders are a bit sticky and wobble as well. the rotary knobs have a very good feel to them, although, they are plastic as well. It assings very easy and has some interesting presets plus you can modify and create your own. The best thing is it gives you 8 assignable channels and an assignable master out. no crossfader, but i haven't used one of those since '94 ha-ha.
the only major gripe i have about it (besides being of chinsy construction) is it doesn't have a headphone jack as a lot of the other "controllers" do. So you have to adjust with your laptop soundcard choice. OR carry and additionaly peripheral USB soundcard. I use to take my m-audio firewire 410 with me....

as for the custom controller, i'll keep you guys posted. Fully metal enclosure, high quality faders and pots, etc.... just can't get a straight answer as to price and availability from the guy.

in the meantime, Meds, Sven,(well and anyone else really) read up on the bitstream and the vestax and lemme know your thoughts...

Haven't seen the 2D on it's own but considering it's just the side of the 3D sawed off...solid overall, and portable...
