Logic Vs Digital Performer
I'm looking to purchase DAW software for my power Mac. I used logic 7 in college and I really like the plug-in's. My confusion comes because I have a MOTU interface and i'm wondering if there are any advantages to using DP with the ultralight. Any suggestions would be helpful. GREAT FORUM!!!!!!

Hey C-Tronic, welcome.
Unless there are specific problems with the Ultralight and Logic I'd say no. Unfortunately I don't have any first hand knowledge of this so can't say for sure. I'd doubt there would be (although you can never be 100% sure until you try it out) though so I'd just stick to the DAW you feel more comfortable with.

I know one guy that used DP and he had a bunch of issues with it. He would always complain about it. Not to say that those issues are not resolved now or that it is a bad platform.
Jesse's advice is solid, stick with what you know. Plus with Logic you'll be using one of the big 3 (Cubase, Live, Logic) so you can't go wrong. The more people use a product the better the support and evolution, generally.

I'm really feeling the new Logic layout / interface and feel it's come a long way from what it used to be.
I don't think there are any advantages to using Digital Performer. I may be wrong but DP seems like it's mainly used in academic settings but is somewhat uncommon in 'the real world'

I've used the new Logic, it's better but a lot of it still irks me. I still can't find a duplicate function like SX or Live, where you can select a part and hi control-d and it puts copies of itself one after the other.

I've never used live for recording audio/midi is it a viable alternative to say logic or protools I always hear how ppl start in live then import to protools for mix down. I just haven't sat down with live enough to get into the interface or plug-ins

I would have to say mixing in Live is not it's strong point. I can't quite put my finger on it but I just feel a bit 'cramped' when mixing there. I also haven't figured out yet how to make plugin GUI's stay put on the screen from multiple tracks at once but I haven't really checked the manual on that one yet.
Recording audio is fine though. I much prefer to mix in SX though, having a floatable mixer and proper groups and busses helps.
I did try initially rewiring Live into SX and then also exporting tracks to audio to mix with. But I found that too tedious. So I've just learnt to live with the feel of Live during the mixing process.

Yeah, I'll have to second that. Live does feel cramped unless you have a big ass screen and even then it doesn't seem as versatile as Cubase SX. Guess this may have to do with the evolution of the product.

Part it it for me is the fact that Live is fairly windowless. Which makes it a compact GUI. but compact can also mean claustrophobic. So sometimes I like it and other times I wish I could move stuff around more.

The windowless nature of Live does save you clicks or function button pushes, but customization capability of Cubase SX is nice. Maybe Ableton will evolve that product to enable such customization.
