Headphones
#1
Hey everyone,

Just a quick post about my recent dilemma regarding a purchase. I am buying some cans for my impending trip to Iraq. I was trying very hard to stuff some decent monitors in my seabag, but I have decided to buy some good mid-range headphones to mix on instead of monitors. I have narrowed my purchase down to either:

Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro
AKG K 701

It's a difficult choice and I can't find a store that might have them in stock. There aren't too many store selections here in Hawaii. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? After countless hours of reasearch, I think that the Beyerdynamics are more comfortable and have a bit more bass. I am sure that someone is going to argue the bass statement, but what I mean is that I like to mix a bit bass heavy so that it transposes lighter on other systems. Many people have stated that the AKG's are the best choice, for some reason I am leaning towards the BeyerD's. Anyone have any input?

Hi Andre,

I use Sennheiser HD280 Pro's but for production only. If I were to get some dj headphones I'd get these:

http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/hom...nes_500156

Kinda sold on Sennheisers. Might be coz I have a big head and all others don't fit too well and I get skull fatigue after about 15 minutes.

Otherwise I'd go for the AKG's although they have their own look.

So did your unit get activated or deployed? This goes without saying but watch yourself over there. Is this your first tour?

Hey Andre good to see you around. I don't have experience with either but I'm sure you'd be fine either way. It's nice to have some extra bass as long as you account for it and learn the headphones well. My favourite pair the Sony MDR V6 were like that and I miss the low end they had compared to the Sennheiser ones I have now, although I've gotten used to those. But I don't mixdown on them they're just for Djing purposes.

Good luck with the purchase and stay safe.

Hi Andre, im actually using the AKGs at the moment. Not the best but if you're after clarity i think its up there with the rest. I'd have a look at the Senn HD and Sony MDR as well if i were you. Dont think you'll go far wrong with any of these as for Beyer (sorry never own one so cant comment on that)
Stay Safe Smile

PS: if you plan to use it for long hours get the ones that sits most comfortably on ur head

I've had a long and storied headphone history.

MDR700s --> like most people, mine are broken
Pioneer HDJ1000s -- > Also broken
Senn HD25 --> Have had them for about 3 years now, brilliant for djing, shit for production.
Sony MDR 7506 -> Just got them for production at home. BIG improvement on the HD25's. Would be just fine for DJing too. Great low end and sound isolation/comfort. Also a bargin compared to the HD25's.

I've had the AKG's on my 'to buy' list for a year now. I can't say if they're better/worse than the Beyerdynamic's, but I'm guessing either would be fine for you. If you can have a good listen to both, then that should make up your mind. And yeah, comfort would be a big thing to think about.

Those MDR7506's look just like the MDR V6. I did a little lookup on Wikipedia and it seems the V6 actually has a wider freq response, from 5hz-30k as opposed to the 7506 10hz-20k. The V6s are quite a bit cheaper as well.

Interesting! I was under the impression they were basically the same, the V6 was just the older model and not really available anymore.

Live and learn!

Got a great price on my 7506's. $120 CDN.

Right around the same time, I bought a Kennsington trackball. Been loving both purchases!

They probably are, those areas of the freq spectrum are pretty far out from what you'd need in practice anyways.

That's a pretty good price as well.

I appreciate the input, I ended up going for the AKG's and I am currently breaking them in. Hopefully they will provide me with what I am looking for. I'll take some pictures of my portable studio after I arrive in country. It's amazing how little you need to produce these days. I'll be in touch
