How does this work exactly? What I'm talking about is selecting a part, hitting control-d and a new part is made adjacent to the new one. If I need say 3 copies I can just hit control-d 3 times quickly in a row and they all stack next to each other.

Does alt-r work the same?

It does, it can copy the automation as well. It is called a repeat function and you can basically specify how many times you want it to repeat instead of hitting Apple/R several times. It might be Ctrl/R in Windows, I can't remember.
