Is this a process that should be used on a channel or entire track?
Should it be avoided since it just adds another level of degrading calculations and causes more quantinization distortion? Or is this only the case if converting back and forth from analogue to digital?

Just ignore it, it does nothing useful that couldn't be achieved with a better method. Technically ir degrades but not to a level that you should ever worry about (unless you just want to play devil's advocate).
Why were you thinking of using it?

well i was a little bit, hehe. Although it seems like, unless it was just a piss poor track you applied it to, you'd have to be an audiophile or ME, to actually hear the distortion it can cause. But that's just the impression i got from what i've read about it.

no, i'm still trying to understand the technical side of it, so i was asking. i know of some folks who do or have used it but it seems like more of a process you'd apply over the entire track rather than individual channels

actually wouldn't this be like a bargain basement kind of thing to do to a track?

Its just a gain change that's all. If you quickly need a track peaking up to 0db then it's fine. In most cases apply the gain some other way would make more sense. Most people normalize to get a hotter level but that's what your fader is for. And if it's for a whole track I'd just use a limiter to get it up to 0db along with a bit of clipping.
And no one is going to hear it, audiophile or not. People just say they do in forums to make it sound like they have super hearing.

I have to be honest but a lot of this type of really technical stuff they talk about seems like one would really never be able to hear except in extreme circumstances. But then again i also haven't tested it out.
and i just gotta say, you look REALLY hung over in that new pic.....hehe.

I know it's confusing, you'd think there must be something to it due to all the talk(hype). That's why I've tried to tell you guys you really don't need to worry about the numbers, it means next to nothing.
Man was no where near close to being hungover there ;-)

Should have never got rid of that SP-12, it literally was hot enough to cook on.
