Overclocking...
#1
this may be a Newbie question, but, any of you guys overclocking your systems for your DAW's?
with recording a band, i've never had to worry about it but writting/producing techno is a completely different beast.Wink

by the way anyone want a copy of our CD let me know......shameless self promotion......hehe.

There are 4 or 5 ways to overclock. The best way is via the BIOS telling it that the CPU is faster than it actually is. Some BIOS's have automatic settings as well that work. Be sure to use an aftermarket CPU heatsink & cooler like a Zalman.

Beware of overclocking via the Bus method, as you are increasing the frequency of the chips on your motherboard as well, so unless you have like 4 fans or more, you can reduce the lifespan of those ICs.

Also, that may make components on your sound card run warmer as well.

I'll take one.

i haven't done any overclocking yet. i've just started reading about it. these dual, dual core Opterons are blazingly fast, except with Cubse, as we've discussed in a different post.
i was just kinda kicking the idea around.....

Sven, i'd definitely go with the BIOS option first. i don't have to worry about warming the sound card as i don't have an on board one. i use the M-Audio Firewire 410.

I have 2 very large fans running off the CPU's, plus one for the power source and one in the front and back of the box. it's also metal "mesh" on the sides, top, front, so i've got great airflow....

From the sound of it you probably don't need to overclock. From all the DAW's I've built, I never OC'd any of them and the owners were always happy with the results.

If you do OC, watch out for random crashes or BIOS restart loops. That means you're system went unstable. Check out Zalman coolers as well. If you install one, be sure to clean the top of the CPU and apply some fresh thermal grease.

I wouldn't bother overclocking just fix your problem. You can only overclock so far anyways so the speed increase would be negligible.

Perhaps check to see if C4 has a backwards compatibility feature for exporting SX3 format files. I think I opened one Sven did and it was ok except for the instruments weren't there anymore. Not sure if it supports plugins on the channels either but might be enough for what you need to send over.

That's right but when I froze the instuments I forgot to select 'freeze channels' so all the plugin inserts were gone as well. Just make sure you freeze everything then you should be set.

Bit generally bounces everything to audio before sending. There's maybe a few plugins inserted that I keep but for them most part I'm starting from scratch with just the audio files. So should be doable.
