I've tried it a few times but didn't find it was really doing much that I wasn't getting elsewhere (with multiband comp or single band).
Like anything though it can work in certain situations. I'd sat generally though it would work best on low track count songs. I've found when you've got a lot of stuff running parallel compression just makes a mess of things.

after reading about it, i was thinking of it for drums. the only clips i could find when i googled it where of speed/thrash metal....
i don't know that i'd do it to anything other than the drums in a song.

Well with acoustic drums it's more necessary. They require more compression and processing since they start out so raw and dynamic. I've found a bit of 2 buss compression and a little multiband seems to gel the mix and give me all the volume and density I need. I don't bother using any sub groups or anything like that for the most part. Maybe a drum group now and then.

do you know of any recent songs, off the top of your head, they used it on?

"they" (damn one legged hookers again) honestly i have no idea why i typed that. i meant do you know of any recent songs that it has been used on BESIDES speed metal.....
Or yes, if clippy has used it, ha-ha. crap, we're gonna have to colaborate and call the project Clippy.....hehe.

No I don't know any tracks offhand that do. I'm not sure you'd really gain much by hearing one though. It's generally one of those things that when it's in you don't notice it but take it away and the mix sounds a bit 'less' exciting/full.
Main thing it let's you do is add density without having to squash all the life out of the transients of your material. You end up with the best of both. Your mixes have a lot going on in them though so I probably wouldn't recommend doing this as it would end up being too much. |
