What are the best monitors for mixing house and electro music ?
#11
Not sure if you mentioned already Tony but what monitors do you have now?

Jesse,

I can see you also have the HR824 !

Is your room treated with acoustics traps ?

Thanks

I have my old Behringer Truths(which are only 6") that I desperately need to upgrade from...out of the entire production process, getting my mixes to sound right is dreadfully the longest for me...always needing to A/B it with the car and such and getting the lows tight...upgrading to some HR824's would make this a lot easier on me I'd imagine:confused:

Tony, I'd think you'd definitely have a much easier time with them.

Pedro,

I utilize my HR824s very close range, within arms length, this helps to counter any room problems for me. In the past I have used treatment but in my current studio I didn't find the need to. My advice is to stick them in close proximity to you. They won't sound quite as 'impressive' but you'll get a more focused sound.

may be a really dumb question, but don't you want the flatest monitors you can get for near field? So wouldn't Yamaha's be a better option?

Generally you want the flattest monitors in all situations, unless you are trying to simulate a certain environment, like a club or small home speakers. I don't have enough experience with the Yammy's to comment on them. At this point I know the Mackies so well so they work for me.

btw Where did you see information that suggests the Yams are flatter than the Mackies?

I've got this book i'll have to dig up. written in the 90's by some uber-audio-God and he claims the flattest monitors every built were these Yammy's from the 70's that have this aluminium grill thing on them. they are big and ugly and if i remember right were only produced for a few years in the 70's.
I've also read a lot of stuff that talks about the white coned Yammy's (the older models from the late 80's/early 90's i believe) being very, very flat.
those i've had a lot of experience with in the studio in a band setting. they are really good near-fields. the biggest con is the are passive so you have to get an amp for them.
"My advice is to stick them in close proximity to you."....
near-fields should be no more than 3 feet (more commonly arms length) from you, at ear level, with the stereo field merging about a foot or two behind your head(no more than 3). You (your head), speaker right, speaker left should complete a perfect triangle. They(the speakers) should not have any walls parallel to them. You should have a "cloud" abouve the mixing area, on either side wall and another on the back wall or corner.
of course that's in a perfect setting where we all have no budget for gear or set up.......

I used the NS10s for a while, can't vouch for how flat they were as I never tested them back then. I do know they didn't take to my basslines too well though and I blew a woofer and or tweeter here and there.

The Mackies are probably technically 'mid fields' but I like them close.

Jesse,

Did you change any switch setting behind your mackie, or they are all at the "normal position" ?

Thanks
