  Software / Hardware Setups
Posted by: djglenn - 10-19-2008, 10:53 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

A recent discussion in this forum got me to thinking about software/hardware setups. I'm exploring the idea of buying some hardware to compliment my software, but the integration of the two seems daunting at the least. All of the major software have made it so you don't need any hardware (short of your actual computer of course) to make your tunes. So I'm wondering how easy/difficult they've made it to integrate, for example, a reverb unit into the fold. Or a compressor, FX unit, etc.

For those of you who are doing this, what is your setup like? (which DAW, hardware, how easy/difficult, etc)

I'm using FL Studio. Anyone using this with hardware?

Thanks for the wisdom!

Mediatemple is having some problems this weekend with having to take parts of their service offline. So the board might be running a bit spotty until it's sorted out.

Tricky- Knowles West Boy - Thumbs Up!
Posted by: Waylo - 10-16-2008, 02:53 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

I used to be a big Tricky fan back in the day... one of the reasons why I was driven to get into electronic music production. After the "Angels with Dirty Faces" album I stopped listening- i thought that album was too chaotic and unfocused.

I just picked up the "Knowles West Boy" album yesterday and am absolutley loving it. There are a few songs I could do without, but overall the album is dirty dirty beautiful and shows off some really amazing production work.

If anyone is into this sound I highly recommend checking it out. Highlights include 'Council Estate' and just about every track after it.

He does such a sick job of melting progressive technical production techniques with an overall dirty, grimy, saturated sound.

check it out.

  UAD-2 vs Sonnox Pack
Posted by: Waylo - 10-16-2008, 02:48 PM - Forum: General Discussion - No Replies

hey guys,
i'm looking into my next big plugin purchase, and with the current ebay promotion you can get by first searching for a 30% off add on live.com, then going to ebay and purchasing a buy it now auction, i'm tempted to jump in (if you have any questions on the promo please ask....)

So here's the deal, I can get the UAD-2 with all plugins for a little more than the Sonnox Elite pack. I'm weighing the pros and cons of each. I like Sonnox cause I don't need a dSP card, less latency, etc... but the UAD will give me more plugs and more vintage emulations.

any thoughts? Jesse, I know you're a sonnox fan. Is it worth going for the Elite bundle?

Background Noise and 'Randomizer Synth Plugin?'
Posted by: djglenn - 10-15-2008, 04:24 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

Got 2 random questions for ya:

1. A guy sent me a copy of a couple aborigine girls singing some song. They were filming a documentary. The singing itself is usable, but there's a lot of background noise. I've tried removing it with various noise reduction software or tried lifting the vocals with no success. The background noise is a bunch of children chattering away. I'm guessing it was recorded in an auditorium or school gym or something, so there's a good amount of reverb with the chattering kids, but not so much with the singing girls.

Anyone have any idea of what I might be able to do to try to reduce the background noise?

2. Ok, this one is extremely random..... Is there some sort of software that can randomize the settings of a virtual synth? I thought something like this would be extremely useful. Rather than randomly mouse clicking dials to try to get an interesting sound out of a synth, you can just hit one button on another program and magically come up with a new sound in 'whatever' synth. Most of the time it would probably be random garbage, but hit the button enough times and you're bound to come up with something great. I'm not sure why every synth doesn't have this feature built-in. Camel Audio has "Camel Space" (FX unit) that can do this. It's really handy.

  Mono filters/EQs

I'm curious how many of you use these. I recently tried one from Nugen Audio: http://www.nugenaudio.com/monofilter.php I liked it enough to actually buy it. It really seems to "tighten up" my mixes or just add an overall 'definition' to them.

I've played around with the one from Brainworx, the BX Digital: http://www.brainworx-music.de/index.php?...=2&lang=en

...but couldn't wrap my head around it. Anyone else try this one? What's your opinion? If the price went down (WAY DOWN) I'd consider it.

Glenn

Also just curious if these are a staple in the mixing/mastering community or if just used by guys like me (who have problems mixing)?

  Medway Studio / Spring Reverb
Posted by: blackwatchstudio - 10-04-2008, 11:16 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (7)

..was wondering if MedwayStudio was still employing the Furman Spring Reverb these days? BTW...Thanks for the tip of the cotton spring damping Jesse, that's been a staple in my mixes since you got me hip to it back in like '02

Has the whole kit from the FLA spot been sold off for the move to EU? what about the RE201 Space Echo

  Soundtoys - Echoboy
Posted by: blackwatchstudio - 10-02-2008, 09:12 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (24)

I just got hip to and purchased the TDM ver. of this delay plugin and must say it's exactly what i've been looking for all these years in an echo plugin.

With a few tweaks I had my echo sounding like the ElectroHarmonix Memory Man as heard on Medway's classic 'My Release'
