After spending two weeks with Pro Tools 8, I went ahead and wrote up a brief review, summing up as much of the new features as possible. Hope all the PT users, and non PT users, find it helpful.

  Copyright Clarification
Posted by: djglenn - 01-28-2009, 08:32 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Quick clarification needed on copyright, if anyone has the time.....

As I understand it, if I were to sample someone else's work, put it into my own work and then release it, that's illegal. Easy enough.

Now, if I were to take someone else's lyrics and have someone else sing it, put it in my work, then that's ok, right?

And if I were to say, have someone copy the guitar riff of a copyrighted track and put it in my own work, then no problem, right?

And even if both said copying (vocal & riff) sounded EXACTLY like the originals; meaning, A/B comparison couldn't tell them apart; that would be perfectly legal if you can provide proof that it's original, right?

However, if I were to sample a short bassline, run it through a ridiculous amount of effects (distortion, filter, phaser, etc..etc...) and have it sounding not even remotely similar to it's original state (with exception to the melody), then that would be copyright infringement, right? Technically speaking of course. I'm sure people would think you just copied the melody with a different sound.

Ok, that's all. Just want to be sure on this.

Thanks!
Glenn

  Taming Deep Sub Bass
Posted by: djglenn - 01-26-2009, 12:44 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (6)

Any advice on how to tame a seriously 'wild' sub bass? I'm working on a breaks track that has that typical deep sub kick. I layered a few kicks to get the mids & highs 'broken sounding'; then added a nice deep sub sound that has a nice decaying sound, kinda like an 808. This sub part is the problem. When auditioning alone with the other kicks, it's all good. But when added to the track, i'm sure you can imagine the clipping i get. And of course it muddies up everything else. It's just taking up too much space. Turning the volume down seems to just kill the whole feeling. The problem could be my monitoring. Maybe I just can't hear/feel it when the volume is lower on the kick...leading me to want to keep it at a higher volume. But I'm thinking all i need to do is something to make it fit. The sub part is peaking mainly around 40 ~ 70hz. (I've also turned down every part in the project so nothing clips, but the sub is just too strong at the level I feel sounds 'right')

I tried compressing, which actually makes it (sub part) work, but I completely lose that decay part. It's there, but just not the same. Been trying different settings, but can't seem to get one that works. I'm really thinking a compressor is where I need to be looking for the answer, that and a good EQ job, but hoping I'm missing something that you guys can recommend.

And in general, I'd like to hear how you guys deal with sub bass in your mixes. I can't get enough of the sub, but damn, it'll get you in trouble.

  Calculating Sales...
Posted by: klooptheloop - 01-23-2009, 08:24 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (21)

I was just wondering how you go about finding out how many times your track has been bought?

Is it down to the label? or could you get in touch with the sites? [beatport, juno, djdownload, etc.] to find out the volume of sales your track[s] has aquired.

I have previously only ever recieved cheques in the post but never was sent any info on the sales volume track by track.

Anyone got some info on this?

Gav.

  New Beatport is live

Overall looks pretty good although a little cluttered at first compared to the old one. I like how you can generate links to a release. I wish they'd show chart positions for any track instead of having to go dig for them. In fact they don't seem to show chart position at all now when you go to 'view top 100'.

Not sure how new this is but someone just showed it to me, sound examples seemed pretty good. Think it goes for about 350 euro here although they seem to be out of stock due to high demand.
