Kick Automation?

Do any of you ever automate the kicks volume throughout the mix for more headroom? I always thought it stays the same through out while automating everything else around it, especially with dance music. I never have done it...wanted to know if anyone else does?

I have never automated a kick or other parts for that matter for obtaining headroom. About the closest thing I've done is to automate the overall level of a breakdown lower so that there is more impact when everything kicks back in again.

the only time i've ever automated the kick is to fade it out, say, going into a breakdown.
