Nothing to brag about over here....but....

In Taiwan, mostly Kaohsiung (in the south). Often enough, despite the scene sucking royally. A combination of the downturn in the economy and the hip-POP culture (although declining thank god) has turned this place into a nightmare for me. Top that off with all the biggest clubs turning to "all u can puke" joints, and nobody really cares about the music. Youngsters here would rather spend 6 hours at a KTV (Karaoke private room) than in a club/bar. Yes, believe it. Taiwan sucks at the moment. I had a booking a year and a half ago in Hangzhou, China (near Shanghai) and the scene there was unbelievable! They were SO into electronic music; could care less about hip-pop. Anyhow, sorry...i've got this problem with people here misunderstanding what real hiphop is. Someone will say they LOVE HIPHOP. When asked who their favorite artists are, they'll say "pussy cat dolls, black eyed peas, etc....". All the while wearing a fitted Compton hat, bling and full hiphop dress. And it doesn't help when MTV puts out a commercial for their newest "Best of Hiphop CD" which features the likes of the aforementioned artists.

Despite all that, myself and others do our thing. Keep it small and real. It'll eventually come back to us. Hard house ruled here about 6+ years ago. Police shut it down cuz of drugs....and it was curtains for anything related to a fast 4/4 beat. Picture this: a small club packed with people....police show up with M-16s walking around showing muscle. Hahaha....gotta love it.

Ok, enough about this.....it's good to rant sometimes. Smile

Next DJ......

Mostly a studio guy myself but I play out in Amsterdam every now and then. Did Mexico not too long ago. I try to at least get out to play or have a friend play new productions to test them and hear some of the stuff I listen to in the studio out ti get another perspective.

I started Dj'n in 92 and loved it. Had a radio show twice a week for a few years and did some gigs then packed it all up in 99. it was very hard to break through and a lot of the local "well know" dj's had a the gigs sown up at that time [things are different now though, thank God].

Got married then in 2000 and lost interest in the music for a while, then picked up a pc in 2003 and started producing music as a hobby and things kinda progressed from there...

The End.

*for now

Studio guy here too, although would love to do a live set in the not so distant future.

Scene here is pretty good though, always something going on, but I find that I get more out of creating tracks.

Hehe ya I had until just now.

Not sure well see.

I dj'd a lot more when back in the Hooj days for the most part. Did all the big clubs in NYC to LA etc..was fun. Since then I've been more focused on the mastering and less on my own productions and that has an effect on dj gig availability.

Mostly spent the last year in the studio but yeah have had several residencies here around Denver. Been DJ'ing since early 90's and producing for the last couple of years. Still do the occasional gig out and Jason and I are working on getting a national booking agency going (under the Polytechnic umbrella) but the label and rmx work eats up most of my time.
Also host Audiophonic on Danceradio.gr, 1st and 3rd Sat. of the month. I've had about 7 different radio shows.
the scene here, hmm, i suppose its ok. Beatport is based here and "supplies" the music for Beta. the Church and Vinyl are here and have been voted in the top 10 clubs in the world a few times. We use to have a great party/rave scene until about '00-01 then they passed a bunch of laws and squashed that.
I usually only go clubbing if there's a dj playing i really want to see or some special event like somone's b-day. Guess i'm just getting old........

By the way, if any of you would like to do a guest set for the radio show lemme know!

I suppose since I started the thread, I should share...

My brother (10 years my senior) was a "dj." Did local bars, for a bit, nothing dance music. That was probably my earliest influence, in highschool I started playing with his old mixer and making tapes and dubbing in sound effects to hip hop songs, things like that.

In late highschool (99-00ish) I rediscovered (jammed to euro as a kid) my love for electronic music with a bad boy bill cd. Got into the scene and shortly after picked up a pair of tech12s and have had aspirations to be a professional dj ever since.

In 2004 I attended a music production and engineering school here in Toronto and now pay the bills editing sound for television. Just prior to starting school I started getting into producing dance music.

Where I stand in Toronto...
on the fringe..I play at the good clubs on the good nights, but not always at the good times and I am not an official resident yet. I'm doing my best to work towards this. Toronto has 3 different major groups of clubs, all with the expected politics surrounding them. Its a flourishing scene and an exciting time with lots opportunity because of a few of the big local djs moving on to the international scene.

Toronto as a whole..
Toronto is a fantastic place to live and party. (minus the cold of course). Of course its not a European city..but we do have something good. We have a regular flow of solid headliners coming through on most nights of the week every week. The other thing that is worth mentioning is the price of the parties. I've never partied anywhere cheaper. Sasha was here recently and it was $10. Even the big big parties with multiple headliners are 25-40. We have it pretty good in that sense.

Worth mentioning...

The Guvernment http://www.theguvernment.com/
Your typical superclub and it controls most of the Toronto scene. The owner has a couple other clubs as well.

Circa http://www.circatoronto.com/
NYC Club legend Peter Gatien opened Circa up recently in Toronto. Its a superclub but less than typical. Very arty. An escalator, live human's dressed up as art in the wall. DJs in the bathroom. ect ect

Footwork http://www.footworkbar.com/
A much smaller more intimate venue. Holds a couple hundred people. Great sound, great selection of local djs, but also headliners. A few recent headliners were Danny Howells, Layo and Bushwhacka, Max Graham, Honey Dijon. This year Footwork also made it into the RA top 100 clubs.

Comfort Zone
Not sure where to begin here. An after hours spot owner by bikers. Run by the same promotion company as guv. Great djs. Pitch black. 24 hour parties on Sunday. Filled with characters. And recently subject to a few police raids. But a legendary Toronto spot that just keeps going.
