I am in the market for plugins. I took a break from audio production for a few years and I'm getting back into it again. I am starting all over utilizing logic and live but, I'm without plugins. I am looking for a list of "must have" plugins that you wouldn't do without. I am already planning on getting a waves pack but, I am sure there are favorites out there that are much more inexpensive. So, what are your favorite plugins and why are they your favorite?

Andre,
Glad to see you back ;-)
I use the Sonnox stuff a lot although depending on what Waves pack you get they might be redundant. Synth wise Rob Papen's Predator is good, so is the u-he Zebra 2. Definitely look at what Audio Damage has, they make really cool filters and modulation effects. For reverb I'd go with an IR plug like Alitverb or Pristine Space from Voxengo. If you are running Live 7 that has a lot of great effects already.
I'm sure I'll think of some more later.

Thanks for the input, I am probably going to go with Pristine space and some audio damage stuff to start out with. It looks like I can hold off on the waves package since I am finding individual plugins that fit the bill. I now have Zebra, Blue, and Reaktor and am happy with all of them. This should keep me busy for quite a while. I am trying to keep it simple and fully learn the capabilities of the software that I have now instead of buying more. I remember when I was into this, had a vast array of software but only used a few favorite plugins and Logic. Hopefully I am picking the right software this time.
BTW, I am using Logic 8. To be honest with you, I like the old logic better. This version seems too user friendly....it might be just me though.

Andre,
If I were you I'd seriously just consider using Live. It's much more creative for me. Logic 8 on the other hand gives me a headache. Live is very nice and contained and doesn't throw out a million things in your face that you don't need.
So you think Logic is 'too' user friendly or it isn't?

Andre, I've worked with Logic, Cubase and Live, and so far Live is the most intuitive and user friendly, like Jesse said. Learning curve is fairly low.

I think he means that Logic 8 is too user friendly compared to the older versions of logic.
I've battled with the Logic/Live debate in my head for probably close to a year now. I went with Logic 7 because I was able to purchase the full pro version through my school at the time for about $400. It was an easy decision because Live was only on version 5 and as far as I could tell did not support dual processors.
Now as I struggle through one of my bigger creative ruts/writers block, fighting to bring my productions to that ever sought after next level, I find myself thinking more and more about the creative process. I enjoy logic and find it relatively easy to work with. However, I think back to the days when I very first started production and was using Live 5--arrangement and laying out a full track seemed to happen so much easier back then. I'm not sure if it was my own care free 'I have nothing to loose so lets go for it attitude,' or the software that facilitated that kind of productivity.
I love the midi learn functionality of Live but hated the automation when drawing it manually. On the flip side, I hate the midi learn functionality of Logic, but loves the way it manages and lays out the automation. Perhaps this is a sign that I should be doing more recorded moves with my controller anyway. At this point in time, one thing is certain, I don't have 500USD for Live, so for now, Logic 7 it is.

Drawing in automation is a little funky, but I like the ease through which I can do multiple functions from the main interface. I can't speak to the version of Logic that you run, but the automation functions definitely look well rounded, whereas Live is still getting there.
In the end, you get used to what you are using at the moment, and all 3 applications will do the job well.

gotta throw my Ten Cents in here.....
i am still a newbie to writting/production, but Live for that purpose is so not intuative. i mean Cubase was pretty straight forward to figure out. Live on the other hand is a bear. i'm really having a hard time getting my head around it.
i do belive for recording in a band setting it's easier than trying to do techno. i just started playing around with recording my band (we're getting ready to do and EP and then our 2nd ablum) in both sx3 and live 7 and both seem easy enough. But for techno i just can't work it out.
i do think it's the way to go though if you can get it worked out. I mean for "spinning" i wouldn't touch anything else....just wish i could get around as easy as i do for that as i'd like to for writting.
as for logic, can't say, i don't use apple.

Not sure I get this then, how can something be too user friendly? Isn't that the point? As far as midi learn and automation I prefer both in Live, seems to me in Logic the automation is a bitch to move/edit without destroying stuff around it. The one think I don't like about Live's automation though is that on some plugins it keeps switching over to the "current state is different" red indicator and I've got to keep pressing it to revert back to the drawn automation. This is without me doing anything that I'd expect this to happen, like merely saving the project.
My main like about Live is how there's not loads of windows popping up all the time. It's a tidy environment that makes it easier for me to concentrate on the matter at hand. Less mouse clicks and interruptions to deal with which helps on the day to day process...
Let me say though I don't want this to be a 'debate' on which one is 'better' just throwing my 2 cents in.
