Reaper 3 officially released
#1
Past few weeks i was downloading and using Beta versions that were leading a transformation from reaper 2.5x (last stable/official versions of reaper, before v.3)

People were moaning (and it was quite justified ) on poor midi options in reaper 2,and now imo it is at least as good as in most expensive DAWs.
Quote:All-New MIDI
Edit multiple MIDI items or tracks together in a single editor. Customize how the MIDI editor shows you looped items, tempo changes, even synchronize the editor contents with the arrange view so everything stays lined up with the project as you move windows around. Edit MIDI inline in the arrange view. Add MIDI track controls to any track, in front of sends, or anywhere else. Explode MIDI items by channel or pitch. Improved MIDI import and export, hardware MIDI timing calibration, full sysex support, and tons of other improvements.

Someone might ask why i inform people so much about reaper, well,it is in our (producers) interest to popularize new great software with bargain price, because when it becomes popular, onther DAW's creators also MUST think twice on their pricing if want to keep position on market.

And i use reaper after i was using FL studio,Cubase 3 ,and Ableton and for me Repaer beats them all.

Maybe ableton is not suitable in this comparison as it has other great options which make ableton quite uncomparable.

Quote:$225: full commercial license
$60: discounted license

as far as i remember from forumif reaper is not earning for you 20 grands you can use discounted license

Quote:No Intrusive Copy Protection
We believe that technological enforcement of copy protection is not in the best interest of our customers.

Repaer has NO protection systems,no freakin USB dongles etc etc. If your trial period is over it in startup just pops up a screen with info that you should purchase license and it dissapears in few seconds.

Quote:Purchasing a license now includes upgrades through REAPER 4.99.

Yep,reaper policy makes you sure that you wont regret that you bought it and next week new version is released /upgrade and you have toi pay again.

From my experience ,i posted in bugs forum that reaper was making problems with one plugin, some users repeated it,and 5 days later was update fixing it .They have forum where people post and developers of this soft read it and immediatelly try to apply changes in updates.

Quote:I suspect some would be more convinced of its excellence if Cockos significantly raised the licence cost, but those in the know (and I consider myself one of that number) simply regard it as a bargain."

So,i encourage everyone to visit it and download from site.

You will have totally functional DAW with no limitations .You should purchase license later, but noone will force You to it with limitations, which do not exist in reaper.
So noone can loose anything on it .

Thanks for posting this.

I actually tried out Reaper last week when I was getting frustrated with the Live problems concerning latency. Overall I liked Reaper although I missed the function of being able to drag downward to zoom in and out like Cubase, Logic, and Live do. Can this be done in Reaper as well?

The other thing I missed was groove quantize. Since Live just got it would be missing it in Reaper as well but maybe they've added it now.

I was curious to the routing possibilities, it seems it's easy to do mults and other tricks in this. I get the impression that for mixing it's a good one and for me this is interesting, also for mastering purposes.

Anyways will download it and have a look.

3 has groove quantization ,and all betas had ,it was most anticipated feature.

About routing,it is easy as pie ,even for me,and i struggled with it in cubase a lot.Rather from lack of technical knowledge by this past time, but in reaper it is really easy.

Zooming -page up and down in main mix window with tracks, and + and - on numpad when you edit midis. Also up and down arrows.

If it is what You asked ,maybe we misunderstood Smile
The version you were checking was 2.5x ,the one without all maybe most anticipated updates Smile

download the newest and check it.

And about zooming ,If i understand You,then yeah, zooming is easy in reaper.

How do I access the groove quantize? I saw swing just now but nothing more than that.

Also what I am saying is in for instance Live you can drag down from the top area and it zooms in (our out if you drag up). Right now I can use the wheel to zoom in and out in Reaper but I like to scroll up and down the tracks with that. Probably there is a way to do this with modifying the key commands though.

Also how do you select an area on just one track. Right now when I select with the left mouse it highlights all the tracks. I can use the right one to select but its selecting parts not the actual area.

double click on midi file go to "edit" on the window bar and there you have groove quantize

I think yeah, thats a matter of customizing, for me always enough was as i said arrows buttons, numpad etc ,but i guess everyone has own preferences ,and i never digged too much into this aspect.

Here i might not necesarrily understand the question correct,BUT as far as i understand:

on the left side of screeni click with left mouse button on track that interests me,and now i highlight the interesting area of this track as on picture. It works for copying ,pasting, selecting area etc,at least as far as i understand, and here the picture by me.Just pay the attention if you highlited the track that interests you from the left side of the screen (just by clicking on it once with LMB) so all the changes will be applied to this track.

I was able to change the wheel to control scrolling although it only seems to work on the arrange page, the midi page it acts differently, would have to look further.

I did find that quantization area but it's not custom groove quantize, just swing, which Reaper 2 already had. The added humanization but that's not what I was looking for. I want to be able to make custom grooves from either midi or audio like in Live 8.

I also tried selecting the track and then making a bar selection but nothing is happening when I try to copy or delete. All I can do is click the actual part to delete the whole of it. In most programs you can select a time area on just the track itself, and then from there edit.

yeah,i know what You have in mind.

I dont know how to give You the best support,I just know all those features that i use.I guess you just have to mess with it a bit to get into such stuff and find it .I never read a manual of it Smile.

Also, best advice is to check their forums, nice and proffesional responses ,and quite much of guys that handle it like pro's

Well thanks for the help so far, I will keep taking a look at it. I think for mixing and mastering where I don't need groove quantize but do need good audio routing this could be the one to go with. I see it has fx chain presets too which can be handy.

I just bought a new trackball today and doesn't have scrollwheel so that solves the scrolling command problem ;-)
