I think you can make a case both ways for protection. As far as ilok and syncrosoft at the moment those seem to be uncrackable (or no one good enough is trying). Although it costs more to have protection it's possible the increase in sales due to lack of pirated versions could increase revenue to counteract the cost of the protection itself leading to lower sales prices. I'm sure every situation is different though.
In the case where the protection actually works it's at least justifiable. The issue would be protection that's crackable yet at the same time a pain for the paid user. In this case only the paid user has the hassle of dealing with the protection where as the pirates get to have their cake and eat it too.
