Tunning your System
#31
Jes,
You've probably already made up your mind on what system you want, and not to get into the Mac/PC thing again, but I have tried out Live, SX3 and PT 7.3.1, on a dual processor mac, and the DAW's that do allow multi processing handle it very well on that system as you can see form the results I posted earlier with the faster Mac, plus you can boot up window.

On the note of vocoders, I second that orange Vocoder its really good been using it for years, but for things like orange and soundtoys you can only run on a mac. Then again I wish I could boot up windows if only to be able to use Z3ta.

Obviously you won't have Roomworks in Ableton so try to find the highest cpu load effect you can (VST) so you can use the same in SX.

Ok i only run Waves Platnum bundle in Ableton right now. What would be a good plug-in to use out of that?

Btw I did some tests with "Boxing"

asio=90% wtb=80-85%

with all the ecomps turned off:

asio=56% wtb=48%

So my asio and wtb are fairly close.

Rami:

When you set the latency in SX its just taking you to the control panel for that device, so there should be no difference than what he set outside of SX.

The best way he can check is to make sure it says 23ms for in and out latency within the Cubase device panel.

it says 25.215 for both.

One of the verbs there will be fine.

Rami,

I don't think the mac/pc debate really applies here anyhow. The difference in speeds is down to other issues.
And to put it in perspective if you remember the Macs with SX we had back at the school they were also
underperforming, about as bad as Bills. I think those were dual G5s and they were not any faster than my
P4 2.8 with the way they were setup at the time. So it can happen on both fronts.

I'm waiting for prices to come down a bit and then in about a month I'll get a quad pc myself.

Not sure what you mean about the orange vocoder as its PC as well.

Seems fine.

Btw a guy I know that works in a PC shop told me that the penryn is the only true quad, whatever that means. Also seems there can actually be an issue when using over 3G's for memory on Vista.

Maybe these don't apply to your situation but still something to think about.

Jesse,
I'm running 2, dual core opterons with hyper-transport. at the time i built the system, quads were just starting to be tested by AMD and Intel quickly fell in line as well.
XP doesn't really recognize over 3 gigs of RAM either. Something else i found out after investing in 4 gigs of RAM.......I'm not on Vista yet.
I don't think have a 4th stick in there would do anything to the system or slow any program being ran on it.

I'll run the test tomorrow and post my results.

you mentioned the G5's at you school were performing poorly as well; how did you resolve that or did the school just over look it?

You'll have to let me know how it goes with the Quad and if you go AMD or Intel. When we talked about it a couple weeks ago neither of us had really looked into them yet so i'm very curious.
(but i need to get this system running correctly first......)

Ok fellas, i went ahead and did the test, didn't want to wait till morning.
in Live 6, i had EQ3 and Waves TrueVerb on the channels and the L2 on the master.
I got up to 89 tracks running, the 90th put the CPU over the top. the WMT was tracking about about 5 counts below the CPU meter in Live.
So when Live hit 95%, WTM was hitting about 90% give or take one or two counts.
So, does that mean i specifically have an issue with Cubase?

I doubt the extra memory is an issue as well, but you never know.

Nothing happened with the G5s when I was there, doubt they ever got sorted.

I'll probably take a look over at Steinberg.net Cubase forums and see if there are some reliable systems running on that platform concerning Quads.

My friend Stef (he's on here actually) will be able to help as well.
