midi problem
#1
so, here is my first big problem with my small synth. I've been using Alesis Photon X25 for about 8 months, there was no problem. But 2 days ago, all of a sudden, I began not to hear the MIDI signals while playing.. There is no problem with the audio, I can use the loops. Also I can hear the midi while playing from the VSTi's interface; but not while playing the keyboard??
Also, there emerged another problem. I have been also using a mic for a long time with the keyboard, and there began a very disturbing harsh sound when I connect it to the keyboard!
And so,
-First I thought there was a problem with VSTis. I checked all of them, there is sound while checking on their interface; but not with the keyboard anymore! Also there is the midi signal, but no sound. The channel routing etc. stuff are all ok as I say I've been using for a long time.
-Then I thought it must be about the driver since I haven't upgraded it before. So I loaded the alesis asio driver back, 2 times, but there is no change!
The problem seems to be about the soundcard, but what; I can't understand. By the way, it is a 24bit on-keyboard card.

Any ideas about what the problem can be and the solution will be appreciated Wink
Oh my God, I need help

Xana,

A friend bought an Alesis once and we had a lot of problems getting it to work right.

Sounds like the ASIO is ok as you are getting audio so its the midi portion of the driver thats the issue.

What program ae you using when the problems happen?

And Mac or PC?

Thanks Jesse,
I use Cubase SX, with a Dell Pc, well it's not a perfect PC for production, but there was no problem before Sad
I don't know what to do really, I just can't fix it and began to go mad:mad: do you have an advice?

Xana,

Create a midi track and look to the left in the inspector where it says In: and Out:. Check the In: to see if the Alesis is listed there. If it is arm the track (red circle next to the track name) and play some notes on the Alesis. Do you see the green input on the track lighting up when you do?

If none of this is working check the device manager in Windows to see if the Alesis Midi drivers are still loaded ok.

Come back and let me know,

I did all of them Jesse, and tried again after your post; unfortunately this is the problem; everything seems ok! There is the green midi signal.
And while recording, there is no sound but it looks as if the notes are recorded in the midi channel! But then I opened the key editor, there is no note...
I also checked the device manager, and a photonx25 driver is available there.
This is really a weird problem. I think maybe my PC is reacting and it showed the blue screen once.. Or maybe a windows problem, I don't know. I think I'll get the windows formatted for now and try to buy a good pc/mac for music within a few months as it seems...

Xana,

I wouldn't think it would be an issue with the Alesis if the driver is showing and SX is receiving the notes.

There could be a filter set to not record notes in SX possibly. Go to preferences/midi then midi filter and make sure that notes aren't ticked for
record or thru.

What it seems like is happening is you are getting the notes coming into SX but it's not passing them on for some reason. The filter is the only logical explanation so hopefully that is it.

If not then I will have to do some looking around in SX to try to help you further.

Couple of other points:

If you can try another DAW to see if the notes record there. Then you can rule out SX doing something funny with its settings.

Blue screens are deffinatly a conflict with the Dell and the soundcard. The problem with the Dells it seems is all the software they install at the factory.

You'd be better off doing a fresh install on your own with a tweaked XP.

I really think this must be an SX thing though. Everything is working fine up until the notes are supposed to be recorded on the track and or passed on realtime to a VST or hardware module. This is all handled on SX's end so Windows would not play a factor here.

Unfortantly although the Alesis is a very nice keyboard physically it does seem to have a lot of driver issues on top of what you are experiencing here.

Xana,
Hi, just out of curiosity could you have changed the midi messgaes coming from the alesis, so that the keys are not sending out note numbers, but instead some other kind of midi message. Try checking the list editor inside of cubase to see exactly what is being recorded. If so it would have to be readjusted inside of the alesis keyboard. Also just to double check are you uninstalling the driver before re-installation, and do you have the latest driver.

I was going to suggest looking in the list editor as well but then I thought I couldn't remember ever seeing a controller let you change the keyboard note messages to something else (if I needed this functionality I always did it in the host program instead).

If the X25 is capable of this though then it's a deffinate possibility.
