Aeroplane - Caramellas: An anti loudness wars example
Posted by: admin - 09-17-2009, 04:10 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Just picked up this track the other week although it's been out since 2007.

Very nice italo production which I'm into at the moment.

I took a look at the wave in Cubase as I usually do when examining mixdowns and was shocked to see how much dynamics this one has.

Don't think I've seen too many modern productions with this going on, there almost seems to be no limiting at all evident by the few peaks that stick out.

Averaging about -18db RMS as well. This is opposed to something like Wolfgang Gartner which is clocking in close to -6db RMS, quite a difference.

I've been trying to go with somewhat lower RMS of my own stuff recently although it depends on the track.

how do you determine the fundamental frequency of a kick drum
Posted by: NuEra - 09-11-2009, 02:15 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (8)

frequency analyzer? and if that is the case, how do you read it...its pretty hard to see what frequency is most dominant at the lower end of the spectrum as its just one big lump

  Live8 Fades
Posted by: NuEra - 09-10-2009, 04:26 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Whats up with the fades in live 8? Somehow trying to put a fade on one edit it put fades on every single edit in my entire project and the only way I could get rid of them was one at a time...

Anyone else deal with this before?

Pretty cool replacement player for Winamp
Posted by: admin - 09-09-2009, 09:57 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Have used winamp for years but the never versions were starting to piss me off a little with too much clutter. I also hated the fact that it faded away when minimizing as it did it right next to my Scope volume control.

Maybe there was a way to disable that but couldn't find it.

So looked for something else and came across: Aimp2

http://www.aimp2.us

Has a very slick GUI with some really nice skins, not cheesy like the Winamp stuff. It also has a cool feature where tracks in the playlist maintain their root folder name. So if you have tracks from different folders they will be organized on the playlist automatically.

Other than that it has pretty much everything I needed from Winamp.

Have noticed the latest version is only available on the Russian version:

http://aimp.ru/

Even has a nice feature to shut down the pc after so much time so you can set it to play music while you go to bed and have it turn off automatically.

Still haven't had a good look at this but maybe it's interesting to someone here. Seems they have an open beta available. Have also got an upgrade path for current Reason users, only $149.

  Something interesting....
Posted by: djglenn - 09-05-2009, 08:20 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Hey everyone,

I've been busy starting a new business, so have taken some breaks from production and posting here. While I was looking for business info, I came across an article that I found interesting. I want to share it with you. It's geared toward starting a community around your product, so not entirely useful for most of you....however, in terms of forums, I thought this part useful:

10. Observe the 1-9-90 rule. This new rule, pioneered by Josh Bernoff and Charlene Li in their seminal book Groundswell, is quickly becoming a standard: 1% of your population will create content, 9% will comment or engage with it, and 90% will just browse. Voyeurs rule the online world, so keep this in mind.

In other words, for every post you make, 90% of the total people here will read it and 9% will comment on it. (give or take, depending on the subject)
So....everyone KEEP POSTING! Smile I'm sure it will be useful to someone.

The rest of the article here: http://www.openforum.com/idea-hub/topics...ommunities

Goldbaby Sample Review up and a little news
Posted by: admin - 09-02-2009, 09:54 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Hey hope everyone is well. Have put up a review covering a couple of Goldbaby's sample packs which are excellent. He's expanding over to some synth based ones as well.

New Video Soon

Hoping to have a new video out this week covering more complex warping of non digital/perfect bpm tracks. Someone contacted me about trying to warp a vinyl copy recording of My Release which I'll go over as well as some latin tracks I came across with tempo changes which make a nice challenge.

Studio Work

Studio work has been quite busy as summer closes. Have had a chance to work on some indie/electronic crossover stuff in addition to to the usual club tracks which is always interesting. Also have had the pleasure of working on some projects for a few artists I'm sure a few of you are familiar with such as Spooky, Infusion, and Guy J.

RSS Feed

I initially had a separate feed for both this forum and the one coming from the new site. In an effort to simplify and consolidate those the main site RSS signup draws from the forum feed now. This is partly why I'm posting some news here so it shows up in the feed as well for anyone subscribed to that as the news items on the site itself won't be part of the feed anymore.

If you haven't signed up already for it you can do so via this link:

  Synth processing
Posted by: przechuy - 08-27-2009, 12:25 PM - Forum: General Discussion - No Replies

Ok we had topic, great topic, about processing baslsines

now what are your techniques of processing synths, how do you make this flat raw sounding synth sound great ?

I often struggled with it and it required from me quite a lot of tweaking in order to acchieve desired effect.

How do you compress, how do you EQ and gel it with whole mix ?

I usually start with one of my fav softsynths, then if needed i put a reverb, then EQ ,and then whole this signal is being send to compressor .

Though i know i still have to learn much much more and experiment.

Any tips, suggestions, advices liek in topic about basslines?it was extremely usefull ,and thanks to medway tip with hipassing i started to use one good hipass filter, bit of distortion and those basslines rock...

for example in mylo-drop the pressure,i just love how this main sound is pumping .it is so uncomplicated, but at once it is good enough to make perfectly groovy track
