  Normalization
Posted by: Bitfiend - 07-21-2008, 07:07 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (11)

Is this a process that should be used on a channel or entire track?
Should it be avoided since it just adds another level of degrading calculations and causes more quantinization distortion? Or is this only the case if converting back and forth from analogue to digital?

  16 bit vs 24 bit
Posted by: Bitfiend - 07-21-2008, 07:05 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (8)

I know we've already kicked this one around a bit (no pun intended) but since i've been reading and learning more a couple questions have arisen that i don't think we covered before.

Since the noise floor of an average 24 bit file is -139 dBFS and the noise floor of the average 16 bit file is -91 dBFS and since you'd have to lower the 24 bit file by 48 dB to yield an effective 16 bit file; wouldn't it be better to record or work ITB at 24 bits?

Additionally, when people talk about Quantinization Distortion, is that refering to quantinization from the grid?

Why do my tracks sound like there in a box?
Posted by: movement23 - 07-18-2008, 03:02 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (11)

I just got done with a couple of tracks that I am happy with, I go to put them on in the car and sound like muffled crap... Why would this be? I did the compression I thought it was supposed to be doing...

  Mono or Stereo
Posted by: Bitfiend - 07-16-2008, 12:35 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (5)

ok so SX3, exporting and audio mixdown (a single channel). if you're going to import back in to a mono channel, should you export it as a mono or stereo mixdown? I mean does it really matter to the sound quality?

  Kick Automation?
Posted by: T-Lectual - 07-15-2008, 03:27 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (5)

Do any of you ever automate the kicks volume throughout the mix for more headroom? I always thought it stays the same through out while automating everything else around it, especially with dance music. I never have done it...wanted to know if anyone else does?

You stop or skip your daw and it makes some perfect sound that you can't ever make again or carpture.

Also, sometimes when I'm dragging midi notes around (plays the note in logic) it makes the synth make a wicked sound I can't figure out how to replicate with actual midi

  two questions
Posted by: Bitfiend - 07-11-2008, 08:09 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (3)

what is "quantizing to 16C"?

Is it better to turn the effects built into VST's off and use plug-ins on the channel?
