A short video and then some examples showing a real ssl mix and one done on pro tools with the waves plugins. Close your eyes and try to tell the difference between the two ;-)

  Limiter vs Inflator?
Posted by: James Stichbury - 10-12-2007, 01:24 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (18)

Hi..
umm.. me again..
Just looking at the sony oxford products and it seems that the bundles come with the eq, the dynamics and the inflator plugin. None of the bundles seem to come with the limiter - which i would have thought would be more desirable.
So what is the difference between an inflator and a limiter?

thanks in advance..

  Composing & mixing separation?
Posted by: James Stichbury - 10-07-2007, 11:35 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (14)

I read somewhere that its good to separate the composing and mixing process by exporting all your tracks to audio files and then reimporting them to begin mixing - so you don't end up composing more while you are mixing etc.

So i exported my tracks (using logic) to check this out (haven't done this before) and found that the bus channels don't come out. So basically i would have to start re-routing sidechains, reverb & delay buses and everthing??

What are your thoughts on separating this process? Is that how you do it?

  Creating a wide stereo field
Posted by: James Stichbury - 09-27-2007, 06:09 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (5)

Hi guys,
I'm realizing the joys of stereo panning Smile and want to make a synth sound really wide. I have discovered a stereo spreader plugin in logic, but since i am using a synth anyway, is there a way to create a wide stereo field in the first place?

I have tried using a couple of oscillators, making them subtly different and panning them left & right, which works, but it doesn't seem to result in an amazingly wide sound.. any tricks?

  M-S Decoder???
Posted by: Rambunkcious - 09-18-2007, 01:59 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any plug ins that striped the center from a stereo file, I'm trying to strip the vocals out of a track, and be able to have the center image, and the left and right, and have both to use. I guess it would be an M-S Decoder? not sure if Im right though.

Ive used the, invert/nudge technique but that doesnt always work, If I had the instrumental of the same track I suppose it would cancel any instrumental artifacts left in the above mentioned phasing technique.

So would the M -S decoder be useful for this job? do they even make decoder or is it just encoders?

I found this hardware piece (http://www.dangerousmusic.com/s&m.html) and I guess it would do the trick, but was wondering if it came in a software version?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rambunkcious
