Anyone else here doing the Danny T remix contest on beatport
#1
So far I've been loving beatport's big name remix contests. Great prizes and a great opportunity, in my opinion.

So, anyone else doing the Danny T music is the answer remix comp?

Here's a link to mine.

Cool didn't see this.

Your mix sounds really nice. Like the chuggy swinging bassline. Somewhat sparse mix which would sound really good in a club I'd think.

woo! Thanks for the comments Jesse! Smile

Tried to keep it simple as a compliment the original. That, and there is only so many things I can do that sound good. lol.

Well you know the whole less is more saying Smile

What swing percentage did you use for that? I've been checking the timing of the current crop of tracks which have really hard swing going. Seems about double of what I'm used to using.

The bassline I nudged the notes around manually to get the sound I wanted, and I believe I was using 1/16 quantization with 58% swing with Logic's midi.

If I recall I tried to push the swing as hard as I could before it sounded off.

Ok 58% sounds about right. It used to always be 54.1 (16b). I was analyzing a track the other day from some remix parts that had a hard swing and it was 56 ticks in Logic, whatever that comes out to percentage wise...

In case anyone is wondering about Live though its a setting of 53.

Played this last night in a side room at the guvernment here in Toronto. The crowd reacted nicely, but the bottom end was a bit muddier than I hoped.

The other day you mentioned low cut filters creating a boost where they cut. I use one of logic's built in low cuts as the first plug-in in the chain on every track. Perhaps if I do my low cut from the channel eq where I can have more control over the cut I'll have better results?

The only time this boost would really be a problem is when you are just around 40hz or so. Above that I believe the boost is going to becomes less and less, so it really depends on the source material. In my case it was during mastering scenario so the program material was heavy in this region.

If you want send me over your mix to my email (use the contact form on the main site if you haven't got it already). I'll check it out and let you know where I think the problem is.

That would definitely be fantastic!

Where should one cut the lowest of the low end, be it the kick or the bass that is sitting at the bottom, as of course this would change track to track?

The only place I consistently cut is below 30. Above that it all depends on the kick and bass. What I'm going for though is an even bottom end when the two are combined. Sometimes its shelving othertimes notching.
