As reuqested:
http://www.medwaystudios.com/battery-cubase-tutorial.html
Let me know if there's anything else on this subject you wanted to see.
Also this vid didn't come out quite as sharp as the first one as I used a wider screen dimension which wasn't a perfect multiple of 800x600 so there's rounding distortion. Still looks good though. Next time I'll try a different aspect ratio and see if I can get it a bit sharper.
Also at the moment the audio from Cubase is just coming in through the microphone, will try recording it digitally and adding in later when editing.
btw the total length of this is about 15:00.

Yeah, looks and sounds good even through the mic.
Two questions for you:
1. The kicks sometimes hit the redline in Battery, possibly due to that one sample being compressed heavily. What should one do when that happens? Is it cool to let it ride as is or should you back off the level a bit?
2. I noticed you used stereo channels for each sample. Is there a benefit to using a mono channel for mono samples, or is it just a case that it doesn't really matter since the signals in the left and right channels are identical? I guess the real question is, what is the best practice?
Thanks.

Good question about battery 2 clipping as it's one of the few vst that does this. Most are using floating point levels in which case you can't clip their outputs. In battery 2 though this isn't the case and yes care must be taken to not clip the output. In this example it probably wouldn't matter much as that one kick was already so clipped, but in general you should watch out for it.
Battery 3 by the way doesn't have this problem.
There wouldn't be an advantage to using mono channels other than keeping them available for samples that truly are stereo. There is always the chance that kick samples are stereo though.

Keep these comments coming. What I'll do is make a short companion video to this one going over any of these issues for people who might not read the forums.

Ok that's frickin' awesome! I'll work with Battery this weekend on a couple rmx's and see what other questions i can come up with! it came out very clear and you explain things in a very easy to understand way.
This may be WAY more involved that what you want to get into, but if you had a silibus or outline from the classes you use to teach and just do video's of each step that'd prolly REALLY help out alot of us! Just an idea.

I wish I did, I almost kept some to bring with me when I moved over but then I thought I'd rather rewrite them.
We didn't get into too much detail on stuff like this in my class though so most of what I had was just using Cubase and MIDI hardware.
I do want to start using some overlayed text on top of these so it does have a bit more 'step by step' feel to it, so suggestion noted.

I'm having a problem with the "new" kick being very quiet? how do i get it as loud as the original samples used?
