Latency Compensation... ableton
#1
Hey peeps,
I believe we may have covered this before, but unfortunately after a session this weekend I'm still having some issues with latency compensation.

I'm using Ableton 8 and an Apogee Ensemble interface.

here's the scenario-- I'm trying to play a nice groove and using an external synth for the tone.

i've tried doing ableton's latency compensation tutorial, where you calculate the amount of difference from playing a sample out of your cpu through your audio interace and then back in... then using that value as your latency compensation number.

i ended up with something like 24 ms.

the trouble is, when i do that and record the bassline that sounded spot on when i was playing it (and playing back the midi)... after recording the audio the timing is even further off then before.

(for me) It's not as intuitive in ableton to shift the audio to the right spot as it is in cubase or logic.

I'd like to just get the settings right so that when i record midi and it sounds good-- then I record audio and it should sound the same... .but it doesn't

I will just sum up that this issue is an absolute nightmare in 8. So bad that it constantly makes me want to give it up..

There's really no good way I've found to combat it yet as the offsets are different in all kinds of situations.

The trick though is if you setup an 'external' instrument then it will work ok. Just don't use a standard midi out and then record audio track in method.

I prefer not to use the external plugin as I can moniter with Creamware with no latency but when it comes to record it's a pain. I guess what you could do is move the midi over to an external plugin just to record but keep the midi on midi track if you want to moniter using hardware mixer etc..

But overall the offset thing they have has been useless to me as it's not consistent.

Ya I know tell me about it. Since I'm not using any vst instruments really anymore this has been a pain. If I find any other workarounds I'll let you know.

Have fired off a few messages on the ableton forum though so hopefully it gets sorted eventually.

Damn, this issue has been vexing me for some time now. My Virus TI when recorded down is just off by a hair. I've tried sliding the wave file back and forth to get it back in the sweet spot, with some success. Forget the latency compensation scheme or offsets as that crap doesn't work.

I think 'offset' is the German word for 'let's make you crazy'. Smile

Hehe yeah..

There's also a bit of latency on Reason, like 1.5 ms or so. What's annoying is I'm not sure if that's just on playback or recording.
