For that stuff I'd try automation instead of envelopes, lot more control. In fact yest I had a session with a DJ and one track featured the Dios type sound which was pitch bend on two different synths with loads of reverb coming in and out.
We had a second one with a random Sax sample and a rising sound hehe That ones got to be a top 10 ;-)

Sorry can you elaborate a little further on whats involved in making a big synth rise? I don't even know where to begin.

The Dios type one is a pad sound but with lots of reverb and chorus and stuff to wash it out. We then put a simple sawtooth sustained sound under it. In our case we pitch bent the two separately, sometimes one rising in pitch and the other lowering to get a little more twisted type of effect.
I think we used the Grain delay in Live, that made a big diffence from what I remember in getting it to sound sustained and constant.
