  Hello... and a vocal question.
Posted by: olidenson - 07-01-2009, 12:15 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (10)

Just wanted to introduce myself and thank everyone who contributes to this great forum.

I'm looking forward to getting involved here and also getting some tracks finished so I can ultimately get them mastered.

I have picked up some decent techniques along the way and love sharing ideas.

For today though, I wonder if anyone can offer me a little advice.

I'm trying to figure out the vocal processing tricks that are abundant on Sasha's Involver 2. Most particularly the track "Flavor" by Girls In Hawaii (Sasha remix).

Ive made a snippet of said vocal and looped it 3 times here

It sounds so sparkly and cuts through really well. It has a kind of reverse reverb thing going on and also a type of flanging effect that seems to occur on the sibilance.

Anyone have any clue where to start trying to get this sort of sound.

I use Ableton Live 8 along with N.I. Komplete, Alchemy, Arturia Moog & ARP , Melodyne and Waves Diamond Bundle.

Im looking for pretty in depth advice if possible, I tend to really get into the mechanics of production and enjoy hearing in depth and broad suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Could you do me a favor please?
Posted by: djglenn - 06-24-2009, 05:31 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Can you guys do me a favor? For those of you who have an account with reverbnation, you've probably heard of this promotion (or are in it). They chose 1000 artists to give away one of their tracks for free to anyone who wants to download. The idea is, you can only download the track there for free, nowhere else. The whole thing has been made possible by Microsoft.

The basic idea of the promotion of course is to get some exposure for myself and other artists. There's some cash involved, but for me at least, not much. Barely enough to cover the mastering of the song.

The favor: Could you check out the link for the track and download it? In particular, can you download and then tell me if there was any hassle in the whole process? I didn't realize they would use myspace for the promotion and am not sure what else is in store. Before I send the link to all my friends, I'm hoping to test it out to make sure everything is free and easy for the downloader. (They supposedly have a strict policy about downloading your own music, especially multiple times, so please only download once; and which is why I'm not trying to download myself)

That's about it. I'd also appreciate any comments on the track itself; it's a done deal, but would still like to hear if ya love it, hate it, or 'meh'.

I haven't browsed the other artists yet, but I'm sure there's some decent music in there. So at the very least, you'll find something interesting.

Thanks for your help.

How does your DAW rank in popularity?
Posted by: djglenn - 06-24-2009, 04:04 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (5)

Not that popularity means anything in music production, but it is interesting to see how the DAWs rank. I've got some comments on the whole thing, but figure I'll let you guys chew on it for a bit before commenting.

BTW, I urge you to look more into this website and read some of his comments/analysis on the various DAWs. An interesting read all in all.

Music Software Popularity Index - 2009 Q1
May 12, 2009 - Digital Music Doctor announces the results of the Music Software Internet Popularity Index for First Quarter 2009. As in all previous releases of this study DigiDesign Pro Tools holds the lead position. During 2009 Q1 two pairs of products swapped positions: FL Studio moved back into the number two position replacing Steinberg Cubase which dropped to third. Apple Logic moved up one position to edge out Adobe Audition for the number five slot.
The ten most popular music software products on the Internet, based on recent search engine activity, are:

This index is based on quarterly Internet search activity on Google, Yahoo, AOL and MSN. Collectively these 4 search engines represent more than 95 percent of the searches on the Internet. Over 100 search terms are used to construct this index, and 15 music software products are tracked. An annual average of the past four quarters is also included for comparison. The following table shows a complete list of the products tracked as well as the changes in their ranking from the prior quarter:

  UAD cards
Posted by: przechuy - 06-19-2009, 03:19 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (17)

Hi guys.

Basically never used a special, more pro soundcard...and i am annoyed with my basic stuff more and more, when my ear becomes more and more sensitive...

Anyone uses UAD here?I thought about buying maybe used one.

Any advices on picking the right one?

And how it is with those UAD plugins for those souncards? How does it work? I am total newbie in this area.I read that it can unload your CPU quite a lot etc,by taking over some job or something like that. How does it work ?A bit of explenation for a retarded buddy in this area ?Smile

Or maybe any other ,decent suggestions ,having in mind price/value ?
Both cards for PC computers, and external for laptops,as i am going to buy at last a decent laptop .

Some suggestions, views are really welcome .This more "hardware" part of music production is tough for me still,as i was always basing on software and old crappy computer.

And now i do a bouncer job in stripclub and i earn lthere quite a lotl ,so at last a more optimistic views for buying a usefull machine ....(till now i used a old pc with 1,6 ghz single core cpu,,512 ram etc ... and believe me guys i am a magician in terms of squeezing the hell out of any computer after this nightmare hehe,it learned me quite much)

Using compression to adjust the tail on a kick
Posted by: Waylo - 06-15-2009, 07:55 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Hey,
I seem to be having a little trouble mastering this skill. Can anyone recommend a process and some settings on a compressor to tame (or extend) the tail of a kick?

Let's say you have an 808 kick that you want to tame the decay to sync with a 127 bpm track.... what attck, decay, compression, input, and gain settings would you use on a compressor to ensure your kick's decay is in time with the track?

thanks!

  Speaking of Charts...

With the talk about how to increase your sales by being charted, thought this was interesting...or rather, a bit of an annoyance.

Not sure why an online distributor would accept a chart like this, but check out juno's Alex Costa chart for June.

Every track is either his original, remix or collaboration. Now, perhaps he truly plays those, but come on! A bit too obvious, isn't it?

  Loop9samples & Vocals

Came across this guy's site. He's giving away royalty free samples. Claims that he's done them himself and there's no copyright restrictions at all. Whether that's true or not....you be the judge.

I've downloaded his FX pack and wasn't too impressed, but will check the others; must be a few gems in there.

  Metering/levels/dbs
Posted by: pk1 - 06-10-2009, 04:21 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

Apologies if this makes no sense... at least I know what i'm trying to say lol...

Basically i'm just wondering how much attention I need to pay to the final levels of my mix. I normally just play the finished track through, then if it has gone over 0db, ill reduce it so its a few db under, & then send off to be mastered.

Now Ive started putting the Sonalksis Free G meter/channel vst on my master output, so I can read the meters more accurately. THis shows both peak & rms values. About how many db of dynamic range would you suggest to aim for? I realise its a case of using your ears but a rough idea for this style of music? I dont want it to sound too flat, but dont want my snares smacking through the mix and eating up all the headroom etc.

And about how many dbs under 0 should I be aiming the finished track to be in order to be sent off for mastering, ive seen some sites suggest -6db ish? And is this an issue if its all done in 32bit float within the DAW? and then sent to Medway for example to be mastered, because I thought the 32bit provides more headroom so no clipping occurs?

So overall whats the best condition for an unmastered wav to be in in terms of levels, dynamic range etc.

THanks Confused

Paul
