New Profile section - check it out...
Posted by: admin - 09-28-2009, 06:55 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (9)

Ok tweaked what I had for the profile pages themselves with a few things that Glenn mentioned. Take a look and see if this is basically what you need:

http://www.medwaystudios.com/myprofile

Generally its some info about you and then the ability to upload both patches/session files (supports fxp, fxb, als, and zip but let me know what other extensions are needed).

And then you can also upload a song/clip, write a little description about it, give the genre (these will be predetermined in a list to aid in searching later), and what 'state' it's in. So for collab status like my example is set to you could see this on the main page I'm about to make.

There you could search for songs with collab status along with genre.

You will also be able to private message someone in order to initiate sharing of files if you dont want them directly on your profile..

Also there's a comment system for each profile so basically a 'wall' to post comments and chat publicly.. then you can spam each other and it can be just like MySpace Big Grin

So please have a look and see what you think so far.

  Online Collaborations?
Posted by: djglenn - 09-27-2009, 03:13 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (5)

Are there any leading websites for bringing together artists for collaborations? I think for every song I finish, I probably have 15 unfinished tracks; often because there's just something 'not right'. I've been thinking that getting another take on it from another producer could help finish some, but nobody to speak of around me to do that.

I've been searching for a website, but haven't found anything well organized. Like, search for people by location, genre, etc.. Would be a cool website for someone to create if no one has yet. Just post up your unfinished track and let people proposition ya. Or just put out a call for a collab and post links to your previous work and then hook up with someone.

Thanks

This tune is so good it kills me. Some of the sounds he uses are just mental. Blows me away every time.

  What FILTER do you use?
Posted by: Waylo - 09-25-2009, 04:42 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (7)

Hey peeps,
Today I'm thinking about filters. A lot of time I just use an EQ plugin and automate it, but thought i'd check to see what kind of filter you use/love.

I dont need a lot of fancy options, just a sick highpass/lowpass filter that sounds juicy.

As a reference, my absolute favorite filter is the one on the Allen & Heath Xone mixers. Is there anything that sounds like those in software?

FOR MAC please.

  Expanders-- when/why/what do they do?
Posted by: Waylo - 09-24-2009, 05:10 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Hey peeps,
Just realized that I'm not really clear on when you'd use an expander plugin. (and no not the Xpander... Wink )

I have one on my vocal preamp, and it pretty much acts as a noise gate for when i'm recording in my apartment.

What does an expander do? When would you use it? Any best practices?

thanks!

Ableton Live 8 Training Course announced
Posted by: admin - 09-22-2009, 04:26 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Ok have decided to put together a full fledged online course as it seems not everyone can do the one on one tutoring that I've been providing.

This first one will be covering Ableton from top to bottom in creating a finished track. Will show a few basics but the idea is to be a very practical course to give anyone all the stuff they really need to finish a track.

It will consist of videos along with written and graphic info as well as a few quizzes here and there. I can also set up a dedicated forum for the members of the course to discuss things inside the program.

You can see a bit more info here: Ableton Training

Video: Warping a vinyl track in Ableton Live 8
Posted by: admin - 09-22-2009, 04:19 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Had an email request not too long ago with someone wanting info on how to properly warp a track that was recorded from vinyl and just happened to be one of my old tracks, My Release.

So made a video on this subject that you can see here:

http://www.medwaystudios.com/Ableton-Liv...g-Tutorial

Next I'll be tackling an even tougher track, latin with tempo changes...

  Clipping
Posted by: Edel - 09-22-2009, 10:28 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (4)

Just received some mp3 promos from a label. Had a listen to it on my player and found one of the mix to sound alil weird as compared to the rest. Did an analysis of it and found that the mp3 file had severe clipping through-out the mix. I dont have access to the wav file and was only given a 320kbps copy of it. My question is - If an audio file was mastered at a really hot level does it naturally clip when you compress an mp3 copy of the said file? Also how will this file translate if played out on a Club system?

A Pic of the 320kbps mp3 file attached
