Hey guys.
I think this topic is directed mainly to mr Medway who as we know knows his stuff with mastering.
I was wondering often how much proper mastering can improove my mix,you know, this is this stage when you wonder if your track really sound good or not,and you are bit shy to put all the stuff forward
And i listened examples on medwaystudios.com ,especially noticeable huuuge changes were in the 2nd example...I was astonished how "crappy" it sounded before and how amazing after.Weak bass ,not so "goovy" feeling before, and after magic sparkle form medway boom,it sounded great...
Is there any possiblity to here more before/after examples?
To be honest, basically,to learn at which point of production skills i am .To compare it with other producers, what stuff they send to engineers.
And maybe anyone else knows examples of before/after mastering on the internet and can provide links?
I would love to hear how sound tracks of good producers right before mastering,to which level they are able to bring it without help of engineer. It would show where i am with my skills.
I think everyone would love to make such comparation with himself
Oh,and btw i know that mastering is just a final polishing etc, nothing that makes great track from crappy track etc.But what i heard in examples provided by medway on this site ,medwaystudios.com it totally surpassed my expectations. It added A LOT to example tracks

Odd Warping Problem

I'm new to Live which I intend to use for dj'ing and am still trying to figure out the intricacies of warping a long piece if auto warping doesn't do the trick or needs some fine tuning ( usually the case I've found).
Today while attempting to warp Felix Da Housecat's "Silver Screen, Shower Scene" I encountered an interesting problem.
I use the metronome as a reference when warping. During the second break the beat drops out and when it comes back it is no longer in sync with the metronome. I have tried to correct this manually by moving warp markers to where I think (sometimes guess) where they should be by looking at the waveform with limited success. I always seem to end up with a segment or two between markers where the audio sounds compressed or elongated, speeds up or slows down.
Has anyone encountered this problem? Any advice for a beginner?
I'm kind of bewildered.

Ableton Live 8 latency issues

Just posted this over at their support forums but figured I'd copy it here in case anyone else was having the same issues (which are fairly frustrating to deal with but at least I found a temporary solution to one of them)
"In 7 it seemed as if only latency added by 3rd party plugs on the master buss affected
the overall latency of the system. Now plugins on the track level contribute to this as well.
I have also noticed that the midi outs have latency when playing hardware devices. This
latency is also a product of both track and master buss plugins.
I have found that by adding a negative track delay on the midi track will allow
realtime playing to not suffer any latency from the track based buffers when
using VSTi's and both track and master buss based latencies on hardware midi.
So to sum up:
Track based plugins with latency now add to the overall latency of the system in
8 where as only master buss plugins affected 7.
Negative track delays on a midi channel remove the delay experienced depending
on whether the track is VST or Hardware:
VST plugs will only experience master buss delay
Midi outs will not experience any delay"
Additionally audio recorded from an external midi device is showing uncorrected latency
according to the buffer settings. For instance if my buffer is 49ms total latency my recorded audio
of the midi is 49ms late.
If I create an external instrument instance to control the same device and freeze and flatten
the resulting audio it is corrected fine.

Online Music Course Recommendations?

I've been thinking to take some music courses, but living where I do, it would be nearly impossible to find something useful AND in English. So, I'm kind of limited to online instruction. Not sure how useful it would be, granted, better than nothing.
Main thing I'm looking for is affordability. Of course, knowledge, professionalism, and such are all a given; must have those things. I was looking at pointblanklondon.com; they seemed pretty decent for online courses, but their prices are WAY outta my range.
So....any recommendations? As far as content....well, anything useful...but especially something like "Music 101" but in an electronic music, DAW context.
Thanks

I thought today using my two favourite handy free plugins that we could actually make a list of those totally bargain (because free) and top quality plugins that we DO use in our productions.
Lets make this one a sticky topic i think,it can be great source for everyone ,with decent posts and finds.
If we post here, lets also post here links to those plugins,as some of them sometimes do not even have proper website (or website is already down because people forgot about those gems)
I will start with:
DFX Monomaker - plugin from 2002 year.
http://destroyfx.smartelectronix.com/sof...er-win.zip
Handy little buddy to make mono those tracks that should be mono
Blue Cat's FreqAnalyst - Smart plugin to analyze sound frequencies (today thanks to him i learned that i was making one mistake using oxford EQ)

Limiters -how to set it properly

Hi lads.
Basically ,i use oxford limiter ,and i only,ONLY rely on those fabric presets, using mostly preset called "classic"
And actually i never interested too much into how is every single thing there set and why when i picked this preset. It just sounded ok for me.
But now i read and read and read and i found out for example on Laidback Luke's forum a post by himself about Limiter and "loudness war"
Quote:So there's a secret as well, I can tell you it myself as I found out myself. Try and find a limiter that actually has a gain that goes above 0db!
When it comes to gain reduction, what ever sounds nice and still dynamic. And it shouldn't sound open all of a sudden when the kick is out.
Don't know those settings by head. You should set the release so it pumps up and down like the hihats. So nothing too short, can't tell
you the actual setting because I got that one from the Swedes.
and at this point, when he writes about release i never wondered how it is set in my limiter...
damn.
Can any experienced user, medway, sven hauck or anyone who has good experience explain me bit more with usage of limiter and his release?
How it affects mix?
(I have in mind limiter on mastering bus)
Maybe Medway as You posted presets for oxford dynamics, could you also recommend, post some presets for oxford limiter? (i guess You use it also if you use oxford dynamics?)
I would like to exploit and exhaust topic of limiters .
By this time i learned that it improoves volume level of your track and also can bring up some transparency, depends from limiters (voxengo elephant seems to really bring transparence )
