There's plenty of opinion on places like gearslutz about limiters but this does seem useful. I wouldn't say there is a 'best' though. Each one has it's own sound and I use them according to the type of track I'm processing.

Typically, do limiters make any appearances in your actual composition session, or are they saved for mastering?

In my case I don't do a separate mastering session as I mix with all that stuff on from the very beginning. For someone sending off though you should keep them off.

So i put the L2 on the master and set it about -1 to -3 so i can run all the channels as loud as i can with out clipping the master (or of course clipping the channel). Should i not be doing that?

Depends on the program material. For me the L2 mushes transients, this can be ok but if the mix is already a bit hazy it will make it too soft. I actually purposely use the L2 to soften mixes with too sharp/punch transients.
Obviously in your case at the moment I'm going to take it off, but it's ok to have it there to get a general feel for how the mix will shape up when I apply whatever limiter I feel is appropriate.

AAAHHH, and heres me thinkin it was my production skills that made for a muddy mix ! THat damn L2 limiter

All the Waves ones seem to have that characteristic. The snappiest one is Ozone3 set to clipping mode.

so it limits it below the point of clipping, correct? is Ozone pc compatible?
