best software reverb?
#11
Can the other Logic users chime in on which space designer presets they use? I've always had trouble getting it to sound right in my dance mix.

There's a company that just put out a bunch of tweaked lexicon impulse responses that sound great-- but they're charging $50 for the kit. Seems like a lot just for some IR's.

Looks like it's been discontinued. But what prices I could find put it at around $399 ($450 retail). WAY over my budget for a reverb plugin. Being that it's discontinued, I think I can rationalize 'testing' it myself. Will let ya know what I think if I can find it.

Depends, if they're done correctly it takes time and good converters etc...and if so then they can be pretty realistic which is a lot cheaper than the $1500 or so I paid for my Lexicon PCM80 back in the day.

I think cos there's so much free stuff out there a lot of software is devalued nowadays when we used to spend loads on hardware which didn't always amount to that much better results.

Ya used to go to noisevault quite a bit. Was cleaning up my drive yesterday and found a bunch of stuff I downloaded there. In fact one of them is a locker room from the beach down the road from where I live now, kinda funny to see that one.

Also found some of the first IR's available back in 2001 that I bought from Studiocat:

man, after reading thru this thread, i gotta admit reverb - rack or plug-in, is reverb. and i by no means am being a smart-arse about this. Granted some freeware and/or cheaper plugs will just be inherently crappy. additionally, some racks have a very specific "sound" quality, as Jesse mentioned Lexi always has; but that was also one of the big reasons why it became a staple in the recording industry (same with their delays). Just as say TC has a much, much more "sterile" sound or dB has a "brittle" sound......
so leaving those two generalizations out, it really comes down to just spending countless hours dialing it in. whether you run it on the buss or as a send, etc., the possibilities of eq'ing it, pre-delay, mix, etc., etc., etc. just countless (metaphorically speaking) combination's and ways to achieve it. Call me crazy but I really doubt if you had a nice recording, blind-folded 10 pro's and then asked them about the reverb (again leaving out the 2 general exceptions mentioned above) it would really be an audible difference.
this ties back into that article Jesse posted nicely.....

I agree, the differences are generally a lot smaller than most people seem to think they are. Maybe soloed you can tell but unless your mix is pristine you won't be hearing too much subtly. A good Lexi is the LXP15. Cheaper unit but really nice and grainy but colorful. I'll have to find some impulses of that one.

Also a trick with impulses is to use a small amount of chorus on them to give it a bit of movement to the otherwise static nature of how they work.
