| Do the DAW's sound diffrent? |

Ok i guess i raise one of those tough discussions,but...
As maybe some of You already noticed,i used to praise Reaper.
It is great, cheap DAW with possibilities not worse then those most expensive DAW have, created by a computer software genius (i think creator of winamp, some p2p software etc if i remember well).Everything seems to be perfect in it.
But after a long time with Repaer,I installed once again SONAR 6.
I imported same loops and..damn they sounded diffrent in sonar then they sound in reaper.Without using any effects .Just raw import to both DAW's.
And i must say Sonar seemed to sound better, warmer, more pro, sound was clearer.
And i heard plenty of diffrent oppinions, that DAWs just "do the math",they cant change how your loops and vst sounds, but i am not deaf .It definitelly sounds diffrent.
What are your experiences guys ?
I think i also noticed in past diffrence when tried ableton demo, and compared to cubase, but cant remember my exact thoughts .

Hi guys. What are your recommendations with softsynths?
Which one is for You essential /you love to work with ?
Personally i found synth1 as an amazing synth, and it is completely free with loads of superb presets to download .
Second one is Massive by NI by its enormous flexibility in modifying sound and creating new presets.
or maybe there are any new synths that you recommend to check demos ? I might be not up to date too much with them

Hi guys.
I would like to start discussion about yours way to produce, compose a track.Ad this point i want to focus only on arrangement, composing.
I guess most of us uses just VST instruments and cant afford analog external instruments etc.
Now,as we know if you run in your DAW few VST instruments, delay effects, reverb it can totally exhaus the possibilities of your CPU and at certain part of song you probably often met problems "damn how can i carry on ,i made this buildup and cpu barely breaths"
How do you deal with it? I certainly few times had such problem (i work on quite crappy PC ,but actually i kept it on purpose ,it forced me to learn a lot)
Now i decided to start new project and "glue" tre track with made by me few bars loops. For example in few minutes i wil lsit down with Massive by Native instruments and compose a melody riff. Same with bassline etc.
And i will be importing them to a project ,arrange it all and then again i will switch from my project to a VST and compose another part ,export as wav,and then import to project.
What are your ways?
Actually it seems to be soooooo easy, but i never done it And i noticed that everytime i was watching tutorial vid by pros, like stonebridge etc they had in their DAW imported WAV files, not running any of those cpu consuming VST instruments. All software that was "on" in final projects were only sidechain compressors, compressors, delays ,reverbs etc,but all melody in final project was based on WAV files arranged into a final mix.
I think it is called "bouncing " the track? Am i right? It seems to be only reasonable way to compose more complicated and full of effects track.
Or maybe you have a machine like i think ian carey described on his board,24 GHZ total etc

I came across this interesting article a week ago....
http://www.eqmag.com/article/positively-bt/jul-05/11520
Towards the end of the article, BT gives away one of his 'biggest tricks'. Says he shelves everything below 120 hz except the kick and bassline; essentially, allowing those two to come through clearly, without the mud.
In theory this sounds good, but I've read some comments saying that doing something like this will "suck the life out of some instruments".
Anyone do anything similar to this? What's your take?

| Questions to master, regarding potential future mastering |

I am impressed by Your job ,and today i have some free time and wanted to register here and ask about some advices that surely can affect mastering in future.
I like to experiment and read diffrent approaches to music production, basically i have in mind house/dance music that has to be punchy, fat sounding etc.
I produce using Reaper DAW which i love (switched from cubase) and i recommend to anyone to try it.
And the first thing i do when i start production is picking a kick from my collection and a sample bass sound,to set (now i will write about my aim of my post) compressors that i put on master bus.
I start producing with compressors on master bus and i "mix into them" so in my oppinion it starts not bad from beggining and overall final results are not bad (as for "bedroom producer that never had his tracks mastered by a pro like You)
At the moment my master bus looks like as follows:
Sonalksis sv-315mk2 2.2.1 ratio, -3.0db threshold ,attack 0.5 ms,auto release.
Oxford Dynamics 2.000 ratio ,-.3,6 db threshold,release 0.320s
C1 comp from waves ratio 1.37:1 ,-4db threshold,attack 0.01,release 299
PSP Vintage warmer II with really gentle settings to not mess everything totally.
Now i would like to ask what do You think about it.I think it sounds good, and will explain my point of view.By using few instances of compressors, everytime of diffrent brand ,gives a nice pumping effect,as every compressor seems to affect mix in his own way that makes him special. And few instances of it give nice results,in my opinion.
And PSP in the end is to give it a bit of warmth and final "glue".I know oxford dynamics has "warmth" options, but somehow i did not liked what this function of him was making with mix.
Now,i expect either to be bashed because i do it totally wrong,or to get some nice feedback, tips by master.
I learn everything on my own from books, internet, forums, and i also experiment as i said so i know sometimes the stuff i do might look retarded.
I also would love to know what pro engineer like You thinks about it.I heard opinions that vintage warmer may fuck up (sorry for word) mix so much that even best engineers later strugle with mastering of such material. So i use it reaaally gently.
Would it make any problem for a pro like you to master such track ?AFter those "bedroom tweaks" by me?.
I do EQ if needed single tracks before mixdown so they do not sound messy .
and in the end, someone will ask,i know, how can i use such "pro" plugins being bedroom producer.I answer at this point to prevent it-my friend works in london in a agency that produces advertising campaigns, videos, www campaigns etc and it gave me possibility to get those plugins at total bargain prices, quite unimaginable prices. So i took advantage of it.

Not kick drums, not high hats, but everything in between.
I always feel like I am missing something in the mid range percussion area. What are some good points of discussion to get the dialog going on these drums?
I'm most interested in one word; groove. What are some good methods of practice to get going in the groove department. And then once that groove gets going, how is it kept fresh and evolving through the course of a 6-9min song?

I'm having a hard time wording what I want to ask, but basically, I am trying to find out how to program interesting drum grooves.
Thank you thank you!
