My boss was showing me it and it made me think of you because you were showing me how my track was coming up differently on the frequency analyzer than my reference track.

It seems like a bit of a "quick fix" wondering if it has any use to it...

Ok, nice little marketing campaign I suppose. But interesting approach, nonetheless. It's free and ready for PC users. Looks like there's nothing you can actually do with the unit other than change to the next preset. But what the hell, I'll give it a go.....

I think majority of us agree that good bassline,that cooperates with kick,is sometimes enough to create a really good ,groovy track!

Especially visible it is in those more funky tracks,when funky bassline is bread and butter .

Though i often struggle a lot creating bassline that i have in mind.
And i am never satisfied with presets in VST's as they 99,9% suck .



What are your "tricks" when you make a baslsine,a starting point?

I personally pick a kick,.sometimes add a cong loop and then i pick a VST that i like and tweak it.Usually blindly ,because iam not to keen on creating sounds,programming synths,just basic stuff,that i do "on ear" with trial and error tweaking some knobs.Offcourse i am not talking about such certain stuff as delay,attack,sustain etc . Rather playing with oscilators.


1.For me it is easiest to get a nice bass from those arturia recreations like minimoog,arp etc as they have this sound that i like and are imo almost made to sound juicy and nice.


2.Then usually i toy in piano roll with notes ranging from C2 to even C4 sometimes


3.Sometimes i hit lower keys on keyboard and record it,and when something that i like is going on,i stop,and tweak it in piano roll.


4.I think a creative tool when we have a total blackout might be also trashing random notes into piano roll and then playing with quantization.

5.Nice sexy trick with basslines is (something i stealed from chris lake video tutorial) adding a noise oscilator to bass and toying with it,gives nice sharp effects ,and later when polaying with cutoff might give super effects,few times i managed to create something nice this way.



But still,biggest pain in the ass if for me to create the sound that is in my head.And it is only with basslines,because i do not have this problem with other parts of tracks.
And good bassline can inject somethins special to every song.



Any tips,discoveries ,inventions in this area by You lads?

Hi guys,basically recently i tried a lot of diffrent compressors searching for my fairchild vst(and found one luckily).

But thats a part of it,when i was browsing in the world of compresors i found compressors that were named as optic comrpessors?Whats the deal with them?

Whats the diffrence among opto and regular comp?

I read somewhere that those opto are told not to colour your sound .

But it was a "blah blah blah" article,so maybe somene here can answer,on experience whats the diffrence,and where it can be applied?




Edittrange,i applied T-racks 3 opto and i think it changes sound more then fairchild ,though i am not saying that in a negative way,i quite like what it does,sounds so smooth

Hi guys.

I like this totally low kick that Angello uses so often (maybe even overue ,every new production started to sound the same in terms of basic kick sound and bass sound also prob made of kick)
But thats not the point,i like how low those kicks hit,leaving a lot of space for higher freq. sounds.And still it sounds so powerfull .

Anyone knows how to contruct such kick ?
I guess i should start with EQ and cut higher freq. of kick sound

Just realized maybe we can call this "The Project of the Day" (Sorry if I'm asking a bit much.....)

I've attached a sub bass that I'm working with for a track.

First thing is, it's not the cleanest sample I've ever heard. Rather than try and fix it myself, I'd rather just start with a better sample similar to it. How does one go about creating a sub-bass like this? Especially one that doesn't have a little click in the beginning and that can just start right away. (meaning, no delays before the meat of it comes in. I find a lot of sub samples that have a good amount of delay in the beginning). Or, have you seen a good sample-set of subs like this before?


2nd....I like it's overall tone, but I'd love it to be a lot "bigger" sounding. How can you make a sub like that sound bigger, but without taking up all your headroom and making the whole mix sound muddy?

(My monitors are small, so I may be over-compensating this part. Actual db's could probably be lower I suppose)



The track itself if a "kinda breaks" track. (think they have an actual name for it...but it escapes me) The kind that has a kick on the 1 and 3, with a snare on the 2 and 4.

I've got a nice sounding bassline, which has a good amount of upper frequency, as the below picture shows, and also doubles as the lead at times. It's certainly sharing some freq's with the sub. Listening to it however, it sound ok. Filtering some of the bassline off does kinda change it's sound, but I'll prob have to do that.





Now comes the kick.... The bassline and sub are definitely needed, and again, seem to work well just the two of them together. The kick I've got sounds ok with the sub and bass, but has little power, that's for sure. I think I want to start over and grab a new kick, one that has little lower freq's; Something with a well defined mid/upper freq's.

But then, where do I get the 'punch' from? Seems that, trying to get a good solid punch will just end up destroying everything. What do you think? Or just forget about the punch and let the sub and bass do the talking?


So basically, with having a sub and bass that looks like that, then trying to find a kick that will work, will that be a hopeless venture? Will a track like that have a chance of succeeding in the lower freq's?


I think I can pull it off.....

I've always done the best I can when it comes to sound absorption, diffusion, sound-proofing, etc... Recently, I had to buy some of that 'egg-carton foam' for something unrelated. I bought it directly from the manufacturer here in Taiwan, and being as cheap as it is, they would only sell by the roll. In the end I had a some left over and thought, what they hell, I'll put it up on my wall until I can get something more suitable...I mean, it couldn't hurt, that's for sure.

Long story short, I'm kind of surprised at how well it works. I can actually hear the difference; and I'm only using 2 sheets of about 4x3 feet. So I'm wondering....


- What do you guys use to deaden the sound in your studios?

- What do you think about using the egg-carton foam versus other materials?

For me, cash is always a major issue. I'll pay good money for something if I can see that it's worth it. Like, I'll shell out the money for a decent computer that can handle the rigors of "VST abuse". I'll pay for a proper pair of monitors (granted, budget monitors, but still monitors). I'll get the decent soundcard....and all because it's necessary. But I've been wondering for sound-deadening, do I really need to go out and buy the higher-priced solutions out there? Out here there's not much to choose from. There's an Auralex dealer near me and I've been considering to shell out the cash for it. But in the end, I'm wondering if it's really worth it. Will I see a noticeable difference using auralex versus covering the room with the egg-carton foam? Granted, the foam is kind of ugly, but I'm not at a stage where I really care about that. Now I'm thinking maybe the egg-foam won't cover all aspects of sound absorption/diffusion, for example, I may need to get some bass traps.

Ok, just curious about what you guys are using and how it's working for you; what you would and wouldn't recommend; and your feelings about the egg-foam.

(I've also been looking into Owens Corning 703, but not sure if that would be practical in a smaller room)

Finally got this into shape enough to replace the old site so if you just head over to http://www.medwaystudios.com you can check it out.

Mostly a face lift, reorganized version, the community features need to be put in at a later date. The videos have a proper comments type page now. Also all the articles, vids, and tuts are tagged internally so eventually it'll be setup to view 'items like this' sort of thing.
